Astronomers have spotted a giant blinking star, 100 times the size of the sun, lurking near the heart of the Milky Way. Telescope observations revealed that over a few hundred days the enormous star, which lies more than 25,000 light years away, dimmed by 97% and then slowly returned to its former brightness. The unexpected and dramatic darkening was probably caused by an orbiting planet or a companion star.

The wife of Mexican drug boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman pleaded guilty Thursday to drug trafficking and money laundering charges related to her husband’s narcotics empire. Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, entered her plea in a federal court in Washington nearly two years after Guzman was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years for engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise as well as drug trafficking and firearms charges as leader of the murderous Sinaloa Cartel.

According to The New York Times, prosecutors subpoenaed the tech giant for account data for at least two House Intelligence Committee members. Representative Adam Schiff – now the committee’s chairman – was reportedly one of those targeted. Top Democrat Nancy Pelosi called the report “harrowing”.

Dengue fever cases have been cut by 77% in a “groundbreaking” trial that manipulates the mosquitoes that spread it, say scientists. They used mosquitoes infected with “miraculous” bacteria that reduce the insect’s ability to spread dengue. The trial took place in Yogyakarta city, Indonesia, and is being expanded in the hope of eradicating the virus. In 1970, only nine countries had faced severe dengue outbreaks, now there are up to 400 million infections a year.

At least nine people were killed when a five-story building undergoing demolition collapsed onto a bus in South Korea on Wednesday, according to the country’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The bus, which was stationary at the time on a busy road, was buried under the rubble in Gwangju, some 270 kilometers (168 miles) southwest of the capital, Seoul. A further eight people were injured, the ministry added.
