Ukrainian officials have opened a synagogue at Babyn Yar near Kyiv – a place where the Nazis murdered nearly 34,000 Jews in World War Two. Babyn Yar was a ravine where Jews from Kyiv were lined up and shot dead by the invading Germans over two days in 1941. The death toll rose above 100,000 over the next two years as Hitler’s Nazi SS murdered more Jews there, along with Roma (Gypsies) and Soviet prisoners.

More than two thirds of Spain’s 47 million people will have been vaccinated against COVID-19 by mid-August, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Thursday. “We are on track for herd immunity: 33 million compatriots will be vaccinated by mid-August”, he said, using the term for when most of a population is immune to an infectious disease. A growing number of people over 60-years-old are now getting their second shot.

The US state of Ohio will award cash prizes of $1m (£710,000) to five recipients of Covid-19 vaccines as part of a lottery launched to boost flagging up-take of jabs. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said only adult residents who had had a vaccine would be eligible for the draw. A world leader in Covid-19 vaccinations, the US has given 58.7% of its adult population jabs against the disease.

Tesla has stopped accepting bitcoin as payment for its cars out of concern that it will contribute to greater consumption of fossil fuels, according to a statement CEO Elon Musk tweeted Wednesday. Tesla had only just started accepting bitcoin in late March. Musk also said that Tesla will no longer sell any more of the $1.5 billion stash of bitcoin it purchased earlier this year.

Authorities in a Chinese county have banned public servants and Communist party members from having birthday parties, housewarmings and other banquet celebrations. Authorities in Funing county, in Yunnan province, also put caps on weddings and funerals, limiting guest numbers and food budgets. The measures, seemingly targeted at potential corruption, include bans on using official vehicles for business or collecting gifts and cash that are “obviously higher [value] than normal reciprocity”.

Barrages of rockets have streamed out of Gaza while Israeli jets pounded the territory in return, in the most severe outbreak of violence since the 2014 war. Several of the rockets fired by Hamas militants in Gaza struck Israel’s largest city Tel Aviv overnight. At least 56 people have been killed in Gaza including 14 children, and six in Israel. At least 335 have been wounded, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming was removed from her leadership position in the Republican caucus of the House of Representatives on Wednesday morning in the outcome of an internal battle seen as a bellwether of the future direction of the party. Immediately after the meeting where she was stripped of her position, Cheney said she was “absolutely committed” to not embracing Donald Trump’s “big lie” about the election.
