Tour de France officials have withdrawn a lawsuit against a spectator who caused a mass crash during the opening stage of the race. The spectator, a 30-year-old French woman, was in custody at a police station in Landerneau, Brittany, the northwest French region where the world’s biggest cycling event held its first four stages. She was holding a cardboard sign and facing away from the cyclists towards a television camera as they passed.

The European Union will work to phase out caged animal farming across the bloc, after a petition calling for an end to the practice gathered more than a million signatures. The European Commission has outlined plans to propose legislation which would phase out — and ultimately ban — cages for farm animals, including rabbits, young hens, quails, ducks and geese. The changes would be suggested by 2023 and introduced by 2027.

US comedian Bill Cosby’s release from prison after his sexual assault conviction was overturned has led to an outpouring of anger and shock. His 2018 conviction for drugging and molesting ex-basketball player Andrea Constand was overturned on Wednesday. Judges said there had been a “process violation” by the prosecution. Upon his release, Mr Cosby tweeted: “I have never changed my stance nor my story. I have always maintained my innocence.”

A ‘heat dome’ engulfing Canada and the US states of Washington and Oregon is thought to have caused dozens of deaths, officials said on Tuesday. Police in British Columbia said they had responded to 65 sudden death callouts since the heatwave began in the region on Friday. Canada saw 103 heat records broken on Monday across the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

A 435-kilometer (250-mile) rail line connecting Tibetan capital Lhasa with the city of Nyingchi entered into service on June 25, giving all 31 provincial-level regions of mainland China access to high-speed train travel. Some 90% of the route, which took six years to construct, sits higher than 3,000 meters above sea level. The Lhasa-Nyingchi line features 47 tunnels and 121 bridges — which account for about 75% of the whole route.

U.S. forces in Syria were attacked by rockets a day after the U.S. military carried out what a Pentagon official called “defensive” airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against Iran-backed militia groups. The 14th brigade of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a state-sanctioned umbrella group for a number of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, said four of its militiamen were killed in Sunday’s attack.
