How often do the speaking topics change?

In the speaking exam, examiners choose from a total of 30 topics for part 1 and 50 topics for parts 2 and 3. At least one of them will be your topic for the test. However, these questions do not remain the same forever. They are updated on a 4-month basis. These changes take place in January, May and September. If you want to be well prepared for your speaking exam by practising speaking for all 50 topics, then it may be a good idea not to take your IELTS exam at the beginning of these three months (September, January and May) when there are updates to the speaking questions. However, this is just friendly advice to those who want to be 100% sure of their success in the IELTS exam. If you are a strong candidate with good speaking skills, there is nothing to worry about since you will probably get a high score for speaking whether you get a familiar or unfamiliar topic.
