How often do the speaking topics change?

In the speaking exam, examiners choose from a total of 30 topics for part 1 and 50 topics for parts 2 and 3. At least one of them will be your topic for the test. However, these questions do not remain the same forever. They are updated on a 4-month basis. These changes take place in January, May and September. If you want to be well prepared for your speaking exam by practising speaking for all 50 topics, then it may be a good idea not to take your IELTS exam at the beginning of these three months (September, January and May) when there are updates to the speaking questions. However, this is just friendly advice to those who want to be 100% sure of their success in the IELTS exam. If you are a strong candidate with good speaking skills, there is nothing to worry about since you will probably get a high score for speaking whether you get a familiar or unfamiliar topic.

What Is Complex Grammar?

It is important to remember that 'complex' grammar refers to complex sentences. The main confusion here seems to be the word ‘complex’. Complex, in this situation, does not mean complicated, long or impressive. This is a common misconception and leads students to write very long and grammatically incorrect sentences that are very difficult to understand. Remember: when we are talking about the English language, a complex sentence is just a type of sentence with two clauses and a type of linking word. A good example of a complex sentence is ‘I eat chocolate because it tastes nice’. In this example, two simple sentences ‘I eat chocolate’ and ‘it tastes nice’ are connected by a linking word 'because', making this sentence 'complex'. Therefore, complex sentence does not mean complicated sentence, and complex structure does not mean complicated/difficult/advanced structure. Instead of trying to impress your examiner with big words or memorised grammatical structures, you should aim to write and speak in a clear, concise and coherent way. That is the key to success in the IELTS exam.

What Is Less Common Vocabulary?

In the marking criteria for writing (and speaking), one criterion you should fulfill is 'Lexical Resource' (Vocabulary). To score band 7 or higher in this criterion, one of the things you should do is to 'use less common lexical items'. Most students take this to mean that they need to use words which are less common even among native speakers. However, this idea is wrong because it is difficult to find, let alone use, words which are uncommon for native speakers. If you do this, the result will be a terribly complicated and overly complex language. The phrase 'less common vocabulary' (or 'uncommon lexical items') actually refers to any vocabulary that examiners don't expect most candidates to use. But this doesn't mean 'difficult' words; it means the kind of 'natural' phrases that native speakers use. A good example is "global scope" - this isn't a difficult phrase, but it's something that English learners might not be expected to use.
