Earlier in Parliament this week, I asked about the SingapoRediscovers Vouchers (SRV) and whether the redemption method could be relooked into.

Speaking from personal experience and from residents’ feedback, the redemption process isn’t the most straightforward, having to toggle between websites of the authorised booking partners, SingPass and the attraction itself. Tellingly, as of 28 March, only ~530,000 Singaporeans have used their SRV, while 2.2 million Singaporeans have not even redeemed their SRV at all.

I was hoping that the redemption method could be made more straightforward, especially for the elderly or the less digitally inclined. A reminder letter that’s sent out perhaps, which could be used to collect physical vouchers in an “opt-in” system. After all, grocery vouchers and CDC vouchers take the form of physical vouchers too.

Today, the STB confirmed that it has no plans to change the redemption method of SRVs, while Minister Chan shared that there is no change to the redemption deadline of 30 June 2021 for now.

Hopefully these can still change, but don’t forget to use your vouchers (or donate them) in time, and lend a helping hand to those around you who may not know how to do so!

The Qing Ming festival and Easter Sunday fall on the same day this year, and living in a multicultural and diverse society like Singapore means that there will be many of us who mark these dates.

We have been going on egg hunts and doing Easter-related crafts with the kids in the run up to this weekend, and are managing to spend some family time together outdoors despite the crazy heat!

My maternal grandparents have their niches in Mandai, while my paternal grandparents are resting in Johor. Going to pay our respects is a very different experience for each of them, with the the neat rows of niches in the columbarium and lifts to take us up to various floors, to the more traditional tombs in Johor which you really need to ‘sweep’.

While the border has been shut for over a year, I am spending some time today remembering my grandparents and the time I had with them, and reflecting on the impermanence and fleeting nature of life.

Did a follow-up visit to the Hougang residents who were affected by Monday's fire. Aljunied-Hougang Town Council officers and conservancy workers, as well as WP volunteers, were on site to assist with the clearing of bulky items from their flat -- in this case a whole lot of charred tables, cupboards, bed frames, mattresses and wooden doors. WP Community Fund has offered to source for some donated furniture for the family under their BlueCycle programme. I have consulted the family to confirm their requirements.

If you would like to donate pre-loved furniture -- including an adult sized double-decker bed frame -- which are still in good condition, kindly visit http://www.wpcf.sg/bluecycle.html to fill out the form, and a WPCF volunteer will get in touch with you when we can find a match. Thank you for your generosity!

Bursary for P5/P6 students in AHTC
——————————————————

Some months ago, I met Ashu, a Singapore PR and Eunos resident sitting on a bench near Blk 101 as I went about my estate walk. He shared details about an online learning platform, Explico, which he co-founded, and the company’s aim to target and scale into markets from India to Indonesia.

At the same time, Explico wished to make a local contribution to help low-income Singaporean students, at the upper-primary levels improve outcomes in English, Maths and Science. Explico has an interesting assessment tool which identifies specific areas which a student is weak in so as to more acutely focus remedial work. And as if the world wasn’t small enough, and unknown to me, the serial educational entrepreneur of Singapore and former WP NCMP, Yee Jenn Jong is actually part of the Explico team!

After some discussions with Ashu and his co-founder Sandesh, and in collaboration with the The WP Community Fund - a registered local charity - we have launched a 6-month bursary program targeted at Primary 5 and Primary 6 students who (a) reside within Aljunied-Hougang Town Council; AND (b) who are on the MOE Financial Assistance Scheme OR whose households are on the Blue CHAS card.

There was a catch though. What if an eligible student does not have a laptop/desktop for online learning purposes? I reached out to a friend from my NUS days, Johann Annuar of Engineering Good. Johann is an incredible Singaporean and amongst his many achievements in the past has been a stint as a refugee camp manager for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières in Kenya. During the COVID-19 lockdown period in particular, Engineering Good refurbished old laptops and distributed them to low-income students. Engineering Good were positive about supporting the Explico/WPCF bursary collaboration effort aimed at low-income Primary 5 & 6 students.

Over time, the team and I hope to secure donations to expand this bursary effort but let’s see how this pilot bursary program works in AHTC! Do look out for the notices on the lift car notice boards in Eunos and across our rental blocks in AHTC!
