Ground realities
————————

I returned last night to Eunos Spring to complete house visits at an unfinished block left over from last week. Before starting, the AHTC Eunos Property team informed me they had successfully followed up on a hoarding case. Last week, I asked aunty if she was ok for us to follow-up with her and if we could help her dispose some of the items within her flat, provided she was agreeable. The real risk of a fire hazard - as a recent case in Singapore where one resident died - prompts AHTC, our MPs and town councillors to seek the cooperation of residents to keep our common areas free of clutter. But a lot of hoarding cases are within homes, which is outside the purview of the Town Council.

The individual reality behind hoarding is complex. Some residents have a deep sense of ownership to their items while others want to retain keepsakes that connect them to their past. These can be old bottles, magazines, and a vast array of what some or many of us would consider to be non-usable items. So we move carefully and thoughtfully, and to the best of our ability since each case can be very different. This one hoarding case is of course, a drop in the ocean for the work many social workers in our local Family Service Centres and community organisations undertake to address unique local cases.

Who else does the heavy lifting to clear the hoarded items? More often then not, it is our foreign workers and local cleaners, who we in AHTC are grateful for. A big thank you to them and our residents too, who support our conservancy workers by helping to keep the estate litter-free.

The issue of tragic workplace deaths mainly affecting our foreign workers in Singapore over the last few days and weeks was the subject of a conversation during housevisits last night. I spoke at some length to the dwellers of one unit, six South Indian foreign workers who are in the construction industry. They all hold jobs in a supervisory capacity and it was reassuring to realize they take workplace safety very seriously. I really wish we see the back of this unfortunate spate of workplace fatalities soon. Because behind each accident is a person with loved ones back home. And they want to see their husband and/or daddy come back home safe.

After our house visits in Hougang I joined some of our party colleagues for house visits at Compassvale. I enjoyed the engagement with some of our Sengkang GRC residents and had some interesting conversations. Mr Hafiz shared with us fascinating details of his hobby: taking care of his beautiful macaws! A big thank you to our team members tonight for a good night’s engagement.

A small group of us from #TeamSengkang covered coffeeshops in #Buangkok and #Anchorvale during The Workers' Party Hammer sales. Thanks to our residents and supporters and who came up to say hi and chat with us! Wishing everyone a good week ahead.

Attending the Prime Minister’s National Day Rally 2022 at ITE College Central. Delighted to meet the Conrad team who are providing refreshments for today’s event. It has been a difficult couple of years for so many front-facing industries. Wonderful to see everyone getting back in the groove.

(P.S. - got a snap with some ITE students during the interval between PM’s vernacular and English speeches. Wished them the very best in their studies and the road ahead. So much hope and promise in each one of them!)

While this news is welcome, we can better support our teachers in the crucial work they do, nurturing our next generation.

The increase in pay will help, but as shared by teachers in this article, it does not yet address the deeply rooted issues of burnout and overloaded responsibilities. Some even wonder about whether they will be able to keep pace with inflation and the scheduled increase in GST.

Many of us parents experienced firsthand how challenging it can be for educators during the various lockdowns and restrictions in the last couple of years. I for one am deeply grateful to the caring and committed teachers who place such heavy emphasis, and go over and beyond to ensure my children’s happiness, development, and well-being.

We owe it to our teachers to protect their mental health, while they in turn pour in much invisible labour to look after and impart precious knowledge and skills to our children.

It is why we must continue to focus on issues such as those raised in my parliamentary question asked in Sep 2021 (below). We must also look at issues like administrative workload together with pay in a holistic fashion, as I brought up in this Straits Times article last month (also below).

-

PQ: Ms He Ting Ru asked the Minister for Education (a) whether schools follow and apply the tripartite advisory on mental well-being in the workplace for their staff; (b) whether teachers and other staff in schools have access to free or subsidised mental health consultations and treatment; (c) whether the Ministry reviews the mental well-being of staff in schools as part of the risk assessment of workplace health; and (d) whether the Ministry can commit to regularly publish more details of such risk assessments, if any.
