Supporting those who need help in securing a defence in Court is important, which is why Workers' Party MPs Sylvia Lim & He Ting Ru spoke about this issue when moving a motion on expanding access to justice in November 2020.

Sharing the caregiver’s burden

Caregiving is a huge weight for any individual to bear, and caregivers make a lot of economic and social sacrifices. Yet they continue to press on, out of love and duty to their loved ones.

We, as a nation, society and community, can and should do much more to share some of the weight on caregivers’ shoulders. We will need a paradigm shift in our thinking towards caregivers, and strive to be a more inclusive society and better recognise their sacrifices.

I discussed seven ways our nation can share our caregivers’ burdens in Parliament, as part of the debate on the Motion on Singapore Women’s Development on 5 April 2022.

Higher oil prices are a global phenomenon, and several countries have responded via a reduction in fuel excise duties, such as in Australia (22¢/l for 6 months) and NZ (25¢/l + public transport fares halved).

I thus asked a PQ on the annual amount of excise duties derived from petrol and diesel sold to end consumers; and whether the Government can reduce excise duties for intermediate grade petrol and diesel in view of high fuel prices today.

Market prices ultimately determine the price of fuel here in Singapore, with Minister Tan noting that: “movements in pump prices largely mirror the movements in crude oil prices”. However, I shared that the last time Brent crude prices were above US$100 a barrel, i.e. between 2012-2014, 95-grade petrol was only retailing at around $2.20 to 2.40…but today, it is around $3 instead!

In my mind…the increase in fuel excise duties in 2015 and 2021 probably played a part, being raised by 15-20¢/l and 10-15¢ respectively. But I asked if the Minister could share a breakdown of the structural factors that contributed to higher pump prices apart from crude oil prices.

Minister Wong noted that if the situation worsens and more support is needed, the Government stands ready to do so – I do hope additional support can be provided to Singaporeans should inflation remains persistent.

Ramadan Bubur (Porridge)
————————

Today marks the start of Ramadan for Muslims all over the world. It is commemorated with a month of fasting, prayer, self-reflection.

This year, Team Eunos is happy to collaborate with Chef Syed (stall located at Blk 136, Bedok Reservoir Road coffeeshop) who will be offering free Ramadan Bubur everyday from Monday to Sunday during the fasting month of Ramadan for low-income and/or needy Eunos residents.

Collection time is 5-7pm everyday from 4 Apr to 1 May (while stocks last) at Chef Syed’s stall, “Grill by Chef Syed” at Blk 136 Bedok Reservoir Road.

The Ramadan Bubur distribution exercise will operate on a honour system basis. As we are doing this for the first time, to start with, we hope the Bubur goes to those who need it most.

Salam Ramadan and a blessed fasting month to all Muslim brothers and sisters!

We're launching a new series to highlight specific aspects of The Workers' Party arguments about why a GST hike is unhelpful, why our alternative fiscal ideas make sense and why objections to those ideas miss the mark. In Part 1, we talk about whether our proposals on changing the rules governing reserves will slay "the golden goose", to use a metaphor once used by former PM Mr. Goh Chok Tong.

P.S. After drawing $42.9 billion of our past reserves and using "a generation's worth of savings", are our reserves higher or lower vs. 5 years ago? Tap in to find out:

I visited Serangoon Garden market today. The crowd is all set for 10 person dining, though some expressed concern over the new "no need for mask outdoors" rule. I was glad to meet quite a few families with kids as well as groups of old friends. Enjoying our shared hawker culture is Singapore's equivalent of "breaking bread". Quite a few constituents spoke about their aspiration for a balanced political system in Singapore and the role of The Workers' Party in such a system; and what they felt we needed to do to strengthen ourselves and help move the country forward after recent events. A huge shout out to everyone we spoke to!
