It was so nice catching up with residents at Blk 521, 524 and 529 Hougang (in Aljunied GRC) today. Some elderly residents asked me if they would be allowed to remove their masks while gathering to chat in the HDB void deck areas from next week. They would be, but I recommended keeping their masks on where possible for their own protection. The relaxation of some SMMs next week marks a milestone in our nation’s transition to Living with Covid. I hope all our residents continue to stay safe as they enjoy a little of their well-earned freedom!

Hearty and engaging conversations meant we were only able to complete close to half of 122B last night, sorry if we missed you and we’ll be back again!

There was a sense of relief from the easing of community measures (finally), although some of our residents shared that mask wearing has already been a habit now. In my case for example, part of Toddler T’s going-out-routine involves choosing which mask to wear after choosing his shoes!

Also had a long meaningful conversation with a former grassroots leader who served in another constituency, and we are appreciative of his candid sharing. We both agreed that rather than a zero-sum approach, it’s about how we ensure that we better the lives of Singaporeans and the country continues to make progress.

Eunos Vista Friends
——————————
In my first term as an Aljunied GRC MP about 10 years ago, I used to carry out my estate walks in the Eunos Vista precinct on weekday nights. In doing so, I got to know some of the residents who frequently congregated at the void decks of the blocks in the precinct. Blk 104 was one such block, which had a senior corner and TV console at the void deck. Back then, Stephen and his friends would often be drinking Chinese tea there in the evenings, and they would never hesitate to invite me to join them - which I almost always did, unless I was transiting by to keep to an appointment with another resident elsewhere etc.

As the years went by, I saw less of some of the senior citizens who gathered at the void decks as they got older and moved on. So it was a special night of housevisits today when I renewed acquaintances with Stephen and other seniors who I first got to know those years back. They helped me out a lot in my early days as an MP giving me useful feedback about the precinct including little pointers about pestilence, safety hazards etc. These tips, and other things to look out for have stayed with me ever since. So when an ill-fitting IC (inspection chamber) cover was spotted by a housevisit volunteer, it reminded me that this was exactly the sort of safety hazard that would have been pointed out by the seniors like Stephen who had the lay of the land in Eunos. I do miss those Chinese tea drinking sessions, and recall them with much fondness.

Last Sunday’s food distribution saw a powerful collaboration between the WP East Coast team, The WP Community Fund, Willing Hearts and an extremely resourceful donor, alongside an army of enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers.

We started off the early morning by arranging free haircuts for elderly residents in East Coast GRC. The turnout was deeply encouraging and we received walk-in enquiries for when the next round will be! It was meaningful to observe the elderly residents looking and feeling fresher after getting a new hairdo and makeover.

Following that, we had door-to-door delivery of food rations, dates for Muslim families, and pillow distribution to 150 households. Non-perishables are something that we are looking to provide more of in 2022. This was personally illuminating when I helped a bedridden resident with COPD prop up his new pillow and noticed that the old one was completely flattened and worn out. He had a huge smile on his face and said that he could feel the difference and the new pillow provided more support. When some households have to live on less, non-perishables are usually last on the priority list.

This will probably be my last outreach for a while as I will be going on maternity leave soon! The WP EC team is still going strong and the outreach will continue on our regular weekly basis.

The Budget and Committee of Supply (COS) debates start tomorrow and will last over the next fortnight. Here’s an overview of the cuts that I’ve filed this year.

In the COS debates, we get to raise topics (or “Cuts”) to question and scrutinise the different ministries and agencies.

The pandemic has been tough on many of us. And there’s still much to be said about issues such as cyber security, sustainability, career retraining. The Cuts that I’ve raised seek clarity on various measures and spotlight communities that could use extra support. I hope to provide extra scrutiny on these issues, and hope that they can be addressed.

This will be an extensive debate, and I look forward to raising these concerns. May we have fruitful debates to propel Singapore upwards and forward as we navigate the pandemic and our green transition.

Kew is better known as being home to the Royal Botanic Gardens in London but did you know that there is also an estate named Kew in Singapore?

Our team of volunteers from the WPCF and East Coast GRC picked up a sofa and a bed from the gardenseque estate of Kew Heights and delivered these to a single mum living in a rental flat in Bedok North today.

While it was a hard day's work, the beautiful surroundings and happy faces of both donor and donee made it all worthwhile!

If you have any furniture or large appliances to give away, please submit these at https://bluecycle.wpcf.sg/ and we'll be in touch if a match is found with any of our beneficiaries.
