2022.04.17: Kaki Bukit Division - Ramadan Sponsor Event

Sahabat Sedunia - Friends of the world; friends of Kaki Bukit

WP Kaki Bukit had the pleasure of hosting a Ramadan sharing event by Sahabat Sedunia today. With well presented bento sets of Nasi Tomato and Mee Goreng with Ayam, plus a pack of rice.

MP Faisal and his Malay volunteers provided the logistics and support. And in the spirit of WP KB that makes sure no one goes back empty handed, our Chinese volunteers set up a counter to share a small pack of essentials with Chinese residents who dropped by.

Thank you Sahabat Sedunia. We know what good friends are like.

Masjid Haji Yusuf
—————————

A wonderful time this evening meeting our Muslim friends at the beautiful Haji Yusuf Mosque. Preparation for iftar is usually in full swing by late afternoon in the month of Ramadan, but due to COVID adjustments, the distribution of free bento boxes to one and all is a daily activity instead at the mosque this year.

Originally built in 1921, the mosque is one of a number of places of worship along Upper Serangoon Road. Thank to the mosque management committee for being so generous with your time today!

Wishing everyone a blessed Good Friday and Easter weekend!

We were in the Compassvale Beacon area today, where we managed to complete our House Visits at 210B, including dropping in on some of our furry residents too!

We then walked around the estate to check on feedback provided by various residents, and also visited the well kept community garden manned by Mr L. Watching diners tucking into the famous 205D big prawn mee also made me so tempted to have an early dinner

Many of our residents are cautiously optimistic that we will get to gradually resume our favourite activities put on hold for the last 2 years. Likewise, I look forward to more opportunities to connect too!

Visited homes in Blk 533 Hougang yesterday. This was our second visit to this block but we still weren’t able to finish visiting every home because of the long conversations we had with many residents. This is something I cherish deeply though. Thank you to all the residents who took the time to share your thoughts and concerns with us, and also our volunteers who spent the evening with our residents!

WPCF Handyman Subsidy Scheme
—————————————
We are launching a new co-payment subsidy scheme for seniors above the age of 60 who reside alone in selected HDB flats. As a start, the scheme will be piloted in 2 wards in Aljunied GRC (Eunos & Kaki Bukit) and 1 ward in Sengkang GRC (Anchorvale).

Known as “The Handyman Subsidy Scheme”, eligible seniors who have incurred bills for minor repair works in their homes - such as for electrical and plumbing works - can bring the receipt for such repair work to your local Meet-the-People session for review and approval (one claim per year). The subsidy will reimburse seniors up to a maximum of $50 for works done.

Getting to know you…

Great to meet up with our dear residents during my recent house visits at our new BTO block at Blk 377B Hougang Rivercourt. Happy to hear that many have settled well in your new homes. Many thanks for your warm welcome and the many interesting conversations I had over the few evenings of my visits.

Earlier today, we were fortunate to be able to share the blessings of the month of Ramadhan with the residents of the rental blocks of Chai Chee and Eunos. This was the second year in a row we were able to do this. We were able to do this again because of the contributions from several kind donors, especially Madam Zuhairah of the Super Penyet Stall.

We had a good haul this week. There was of course the mouthwatering ayam penyet, a traditional Indonesian dish consisting of flattened fried chicken, savoury rice and fresh vegetables. There was also other delicious food such as energy balls, durian and strawberry flavoured granola bars, Kellogg’s frosties cornflakes and high fibre chocolate drinks.

After collecting the food from Yishun, we proceeded to distribute to the residents in Chai Chee. Yee Jenn Jong assisted us in distributing the food to Eunos. With the help of some residents we managed to distribute the food in time to break fast.

It was a privilege to be able to help spread the blessings of the month. We hope that we will be able to continue to do this on a regular basis.

With the easing of restrictions by government, it was a delightful sight to see many residents returning to Block 216 Hawker to meet up with their friends for a cup of Kopi.

A group of ladies were baffled by the seating arrangement in the hawker centre as duct tapes pasted on the seats meant some of the tables can only seat 3 or 4, instead of the 5 allowable. They had been to other markets and saw the tapes removed so diners can seat up to the allowable limit. Will assist them to log a feedback through One Service App for Town Council take action.

On another table, I spoke to Mr Tan (real name) and he informed me that he is currently working for the Town Council as a cleaner. He have to sweep 2 HDB blocks a day and his pay is $1,000. Although not earning much, he is happy that he is able to earn his own living. We met many resilient individuals like Mr Tan during our visits and WP will continue to speak up for the low wage workers in parliament.

Once again, thanks for the many feedback provided by residents.

By the way, it seems like the Kueh Chap here is so famous till friends from Jurong came all the way to support them. Too bad we are always always having back to back visits so could not give it a try. Will be back to try soon!
