One of the important principles that the #workersparty believes in is that, as Singaporeans, we have a collective responsibility to care for one another. That is why we emphasize that those who have been more fortunate have a greater role to play in helping uplift the less fortunate in our society.

By a similar token, as a party, we believe in the importance of sharing the burden of our political commitments collectively. This was evident tonight, as our MPs gathered together in #SengkangGRC to perform the first of what will be an ongoing effort to visit the households of #Compassvale.

Thanks to the contingent of volunteers, drawn from across all divisions, who helped us out tonight. With their support, we received much valuable feedback, suggestions, and encouragement, all of which we will follow up on. Such input is how we learn about the cares, concerns, and challenges faced by Singaporean families, which enables us to do our job of representing their voices even better. #makingyourvotecount

One thing that I have learnt about sustaining a massive operation based on volunteerism is not to be shy to ask. After figuring out feasible SOPs to run our daily collection of donated rescued food, we need to keep involving more people.

Last week, my son drove the 15-foooter truck (the largest allowed under class 3A license). My friend's son, Dr Arel Chua whom I had known since he was a baby and now a fine young man, also drove last week on another day. He has some pockets of time after finishing housemanship and is waiting to re-enter National Service as a medical officer. Thankfully, he was available last Sunday as we had an overwhelming number of donated baskets of veg and every extra pair of hands would speed logistics up to ensure that recipients do not have to say up too late to wait at the distribution points. Arel's parents, as well as a number of my friends are involved actively in the ground logistics of one of the new distribution points recently started.

I had a business meeting recently, happened to speak about #TheRedCollective work and the following week, Jamie Tan joined us in one of the evening's distributions. She has now found others to be interested in this food programme.

My main duty in this group which we started during the beginning of this year's CNY, is to organise new recipient groups to get them started. I had some small successes sparking and sustaining our food programmes at Eunos and Marine Terrace for over 2 years and was asked to help get new points started to ensure the donated and highly perishable vegs given to us each night get to the hands of the community. Glad that since then, we started new points in Kaki Bukit, Bedok South and Bedok North to add to Eunos, while others in our group helped to get other new points started as well, whilst sustaining earlier established distribution points.

The operations do need support, both in manpower and in resources to keep it sustainable, especially in maintaining the truck that we had purchased under a friendly loan. Do read about TRC and support: https://give.asia/campaign/donated-and-rescued-food-for-singapore#/

Checked out some of the projects in Rivervale Crescent that SKTC is managing earlier today. These included the recently completed Barrier Free Access ramp at 162C, and the soon to be completed bicycle shed at 158C and Sport-in-Precinct (SIP) project in the vicinity!

Some of our projects have been delayed given Covid-induced delays over the past two years, but looking forward to bringing the kids to explore the very blue and fun looking playground very soon!

Who wants to join me for a run on the jogging track later this year?? :)

NUS Top Guns 2022 Forum
——————————————
Delighted to be back at my alma mater, the National University of Singapore for the Top Guns Forum 2022 organised by the NUS Political Association (NUSPA). I spoke on one of the three sub-themes shared by the organising committee - effective and constructive politics. In my opening speech (limited to five minutes), I spoke briefly about the realities of getting Singaporeans to stand for general elections with the opposition, and specifically, with The Workers' Party (see link to speech below). The student body, both in person and online asked some excellent questions and I particularly enjoyed speaking and mingling with students after the event. Congratulations to NUSPA for a well-organised forum and it certainly felt good to participate in an in-person event again!

Team Marine Blue had many fruitful engagements for our house visits last night with the residents of Chai Chee. Many of the residents who live here know each other well having lived together for many years. We were even warmly invited to some who had their neighbours over for Hari Raya.

We had many chats ranging from the concerns people had with their working conditions and cost of living. Some residents also informed us of how for many years there was only one bus service in the area. They informed us of how important it was to have a service to take advantage of the new downtown line.

In between we also managed to have a chat with a food delivery rider who was part timing as he went to school. He had taken a picture with Pritam Singh during his jog and he wanted to say hi to us.

One of the industries which developed due to the pandemic is the food delivery industry and while it provides opportunities, it is something we should take note of to make sure the interest and working conditions of food delivery riders is taken care of. As if to remind us of the importance of delivery riders, we also saw in one of the signs outside the resident’s house we visited “Come rain or shine you never fail to come with your packages of cheer.”
