This weekend, our team did our coffee shop visit at Serangoon Avenue 4, followed by house visits at Tai Hwan Crescent. I had some interesting chats on the CDC voucher scheme and also issues being faced by local SMEs. Then I joined LO Pritam Singh and MPs Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, Dennis Tan Lip Fong and Gerald Giam for a visit to Alkaff Kampung Melayu Mosque in Bedok Reservoir. The mosque was founded in 1932, a year before my father was born. It was a real pleasure and honour to spend time with our friends there. At the same time, our Team Serangoon volunteers were doing Iftar food distribution. You can see here photos of the food packs we gave out, thanks to the generosity of our donors and lovingly packed and distributed by our volunteers. We were blessed to have decent weather throughout the day and, more importantly, the tremendous commitment of our volunteers.

It was a fulfilling day out at #SengkangGRC yesterday, which started with us joining our residents in cleaning up our estate as part of #SGCleanDay. Cleaning up after ourselves is after all our collective responsibility, and not that of the cleaners alone. Much to learn from a few of our veteran SKTC property officers who joined us, one of whom has been working in the HDB/TC for the last 50 years!

The #TeamSengkang MPs then distributed Bubur and provisions to our residents at Compassvale, before I headed back to Rivervale for our division’s food distribution event. Special thanks to MP Faisal, our advisor to Sengkang GRC for joining us! And not forgetting our dedicated team of volunteers who worked tirelessly in organising and making sure the day’s events went ahead smoothly. Thank you!

P.S. Spot our newest and youngest volunteer who’s 2.5 years old!

23 Apr 2022 Paya Lebar Division Hari Raya Goodies Bags Distribution

"Volunteering today was extra special for me, because we were giving out goodies to my fellow Malay/Muslim community. And it was really fun, getting to see new faces!" - Alia

We appreciate you, Alia, for joining us to reach out to residents even as you observe Ramadan (fasting month). And thanks to all other volunteers, sponsors and MP Sylvia Lim for supporting underprivileged residents through this event!

May the dates in the goodie bags bring sweetness and joy to your lives.

Wishing all a Blessed Ramadan and Selamat Berpuasa!

Blks 78 and 79 Marine Drive started their leases in 1977, which makes them 45 years old today.

According to the HDB website, they are two of the youngest HDB flats in Marine Parade. Most of the flats in Marine Parade were built in 1975 and 1976. Their age difference is not by much, but it's an interesting nugget nonetheless.

Thank you to residents for sharing your thoughts and opinions with us. Although some of you were in the middle of dinner or just returned home from work, we appreciate the opportunities you gave us to keep in touch.

Team Marine Blue ended the night with some drinks at the nearby coffeeshop at Blk 80 where I had a glass of hot chrysanthemum tea (菊花茶).

This week, #TeamSengkang were able to wrap up (on the nose!) house visits at 310A #Anchorvale. It wasn’t a massive block—just six units per floor—but folks were around, many were pleased to chat, and I was more than happy to oblige.

Two block-specific concerns had to do with water pipe leakages, and a misbehaving lift. For leakages, I assured the residents that I would be their collective voice to HDB, and, if necessary, appeal on their behalf for cost-sharing of pipe ruptures that would typically be the homeowner’s responsibility. For lifts, I promised to send a technician over to tweak the algorithm, but the good news was that all blocks in the cluster are now scheduled for a Lift Enhancement Program, after some effort on our part in pushing for it.

We also met with a family who shared that they were among the first households to move into the block, and the only one that remained from that first cohort. I enjoyed learning from them about how the complexion of the neighborhood had evolved over time; they, in turn, expressed their appreciation for a listening ear and an alternative voice in Parliament. It is conversations like these that remind us of why we do what we do. #SengkangGRC

Countering Misinformation

In an increasingly digital world riven with military conflicts and great power rivalries, it is important for Singaporeans to be equipped with modern media literacy skills. We need to view all news reports, whether on television or on Telegram, with a critical eye and take the effort to check the facts before forming our own opinions, lest we fall victim to misinformation campaigns.

On 4 Apr 2022, I raised three questions in Parliament on countering misinformation. Read my Parliamentary Questions and the answers:
