2022-05-07 08:05:38 -LEON PERERA-

Parliament sits on Monday 9 May. I have filed a question on the impact of Covid on patients due to less urgent surgeries and other procedures possibly being delayed. Do share any perspectives you have about this question.

Mr Leon Perera: To ask the Minister for Health whether the Ministry will conduct a study on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on (i) non-COVID-19 patients facing delayed treatment, especially older ones with chronic conditions and (ii) the public healthcare system, in view of the patient backlog from the periodic suspension of non-essential services.

I have also filed a question (below) on the death rate in 2021 and "excess deaths" (deaths that may have been due to Covid or any other unusual phenomenon, being deaths that go beyond the expected trend-line).

Mr Leon Perera: To ask the Minister for Health given a 7% increase in the age-standardised death rate in 2021 that bucked the downward trend in previous years (a) what is the Ministry’s analysis of the reasons behind this increase; (b) what is the number of excess deaths due to COVID-19; and (c) what formula is used in the Ministry’s calculation of excess deaths.

Workers’ Party on a (Hari Raya) house visit!

The Hari Raya mood was still very much in the air when Team Marine Blue resumed with house visits at Lengkong Tiga. We managed to catch some families still spreading some festive cheer in their baju kurung.

After house visits, we stopped by the house of one of our regular volunteers, Afifah, for some light refreshments and to catch up. We were happy to share the warm hospitality of her home.

Here’s to more blessings and joys in the coming month.

Beautiful Bedok Reservoir! Hidden gems: You can find some of the most beautiful homes here, sandwiched between the banks of the iconic Reservoir and Bedok Town Park. Thank you to all the friendly residents who opened your homes to my volunteers and me!

This Labour Day will be our third successive one in the COVID-era. Over the last two-and-a-half years, we have seen Singaporeans demonstrate their resilience in adapting to the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Despite the worst of the pandemic hopefully behind us, the Workers’ Party worries that rising prices will bite ever harder in 2022. Singaporeans, especially lower income workers, are struggling with the increased cost of living arising from the higher prices of utilities, public transport, food and other essential items. For the sandwiched class, these cost rises are eating into precious wage gains, even as they have to support retired parents and their school-going children. They deserve more support.

The Workers’ Party is concerned that the Government’s planned GST hike will exacerbate inflationary pressures. We therefore cannot agree with the Government’s decision to raise the GST. We have put forward in Parliament four alternative levers for raising revenue: adhering to the OECD’s proposed global minimum corporate tax rate, taxing wealth, increasing the reserves contribution and taxing externalities. Each lever on its own can generate more than what a 2% GST hike will. We should exhaust these revenue-raising possibilities before turning to a GST hike.

We repeat our General Election 2020 manifesto calls for the introduction of a national minimum wage, anti-discrimination laws and a redundancy insurance scheme so as to improve outcomes for our workforce and strengthen safety nets. We are glad to note that the Government announced in 2021 that it will require companies hiring foreign workers to pay all their local employees at least the Local Qualifying Salary of $1,400, and will enshrine into law the current workplace anti-discrimination guidelines.

Singaporeans owe a debt of gratitude to the frontline workers in this battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Workers’ Party wishes to also express our appreciation to the public officers tasked with executing the new policies and unprecedented measures to help our country weather through the worst of the pandemic.

Last but certainly not least, we thank all caregivers who have to juggle their work with caring for family members at home. They too are essential workers, albeit unpaid and often under-appreciated. We thank them for their loving toil and sacrifice.

This Labour Day, the Workers’ Party renews our commitment to fight for a brighter tomorrow for Singapore and encourages all Singaporeans to take heart as we move forward together in these uncertain times.

Majulah Singapura.

-CHUA KHENG WEE-

Together with Jamus Lim, we distributed Iftar meals to our Muslim seniors at our active ageing centre in #Rivervale yesterday evening.

Thoroughly enjoyed the performances during the short but meaningful session, and it was also great fun singing ‘Seloka Hari Raya’ with our very talented Makciks!

Looking forward to spending more time with our seniors now that Covid restrictions have been largely lifted!

Salam Ramadan semua!

Walk On, Never Alone
——————————
The house visits continue in earnest as my colleagues and I met many more residents last evening. I couldn’t help stop to take some snaps of some wonderful Hari Raya lights decoration in the adjoining block of flats, as more and more Muslim families prepare for Hari Raya. I shared more Town Council related plans for the area and took in more feedback to fine tune my proposals to the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council for next year’s Repairs & Redecoration exercise for this cluster of flats.

As always, grateful for the hospitality and warm
welcome from the Eunos family who introduced me to some of their new members! Some shared their pet hobbies and others, their pets, both of which are pet topics of mine (you will surprised at how much you can learn from the Eunos residents!) Many residents are looking forward to the long weekend, and quite frankly, so am I - No JB plans as yet for me and my loved ones, but for those who are going this weekend, try and avoid the peak hours! Whatever the case, enjoy the family time, because you are never alone when you have your family at your side.
