Lesson 4

John was walking along Granville Street yesterday, when he saw two men fighting. Since he was worried someone could get hurt, he called the police and reported the incident.

1. B 2. A 3. C 4. C 5. D 6. A 7. C

The highlighted text is called a dependent clause. It is a clause
because it contains a subject and a verb and it is dependent because it cannot stand on its own. The word ‘fighting’ in this clause is a verb form acting as an adjective. This clause can be
changed to “when he saw two men who were fighting”, but not to “when he saw two men were fighting”.

He bade me observe it, and I should always find that the calamities of life were shared among the upper and lower
part of mankind, but that the middle station (~ middle class) had the fewest disasters, and was not exposed (subjected) to so many vicissitudes as the higher or lower part of mankind; nay,
they were not subjected to so many distempers and uneasinesses either of body or mind, as those were who, by vicious living, luxury, and extravagances on the one hand, or by hard labour, want of necessaries (necessities), and mean or insufficient diet on the other hand, bring distemper upon themselves by the natural consequences of their way of living; that the middle station of life was (is) calculated for all kind of virtue and all kind of enjoyments.

Passive Voice:
We use passive voice when it is more important to draw the reader’s or listener’s attention to the person or thing acted upon. This person or thing is considered the subject of the sentence with passive voice. The passive forms of a verb are created by combining a form of the "to be verb" with the past participle of the main verb. Other helping verbs are also sometimes present.
