Today, in the Western Cape's parliament, a bill was tabled by the Freedom Front Plus that seeks to acknowledge the people of the Western Cape as distinct from other people in South Africa.

According to a Western Cape independence movement forum, the Cape Independence Advocacy Group, the bill is a step towards self-determination of an independent Cape territory.

The Democratic Alliance holds 24 out of the 42 seats (57%) in the Western Cape parliament.
