Under South African race quotas, industries have to pay double for everything - once to a black formal staff that doesn't get anything done, and then once more for white and asian contract workers who parachute in to fix things or implement a parallel infrastructure.

South Africa has been the world's great experiment based on redistribution and equity. How is it going?

"Businesses are planning for the total collapse of the grid."

Meanwhile, the private sector has taken over gov agencies on behalf of a failed state.

2023-05-25 13:29:57 Most wanted Rwandan genocide suspect arrested in South Africa after decades on the run

The most wanted fugitive accused of involvement in the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has been arrested in Paarl, South Africa after decades on the run, authorities say.

Fulgence Kayishema was captured Wednesday in a joint operation between South African authorities and a UN team charged with finding the remaining fugitives, according to a statement.

When he was arrested, Kayishema initially denied his identity, investigators said. But by the end of the evening he told them: “I have been waiting a long time to be arrested.”

Investigators said he used multiple identities and forged documents to evade detection.

2023-05-25 11:12:39 Cape Town Seeks to Take Over Electricity Supply From South Africa’s Eskom

Cape Town, South Africa’s second-largest city, is in talks with Eskom to take over the supply of electricity in areas of the metro served by the state power utility.

The municipality oversees the provision about 70% of the power used in the city, with the remainder falling under Eskom. The discussions, which started about a year ago, form part of Cape Town’s plans to reduce its reliance on the beleaguered utility that’s subjecting the nation to record blackouts.

“We want to supply the entire city,” Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said in an interview. City officials are “engaged in some rather delicate negotiations with Eskom” and are awaiting written confirmation as to whether its board wants to proceed with the project, he said.

The city uses about 1 700 MW at peak hours in the winter and 1 600 MW in the summer.

Today we remember the victims of the Church Street bombing.

40 years ago during rush hour on the 20th of May 1983 a car bomb exploded outside the Nedbank Square Building in Church Street, Pretoria. The perpetrators were the African National Congress' paramilitary wing - Umkhonto we Sizwe - the anti-white terrorist organisation.

The bomb killed 17 innocent civilians and wounded 217 more, mostly women and children. The two perpetrators accidentally killed themselves in the blast.

Many of the victims were so badly mutilated from the blast that the police and emergency response teams had trouble identifying the victims.

On this day, Nelson Mandela and his comrades killed 17 white South Africans and wounded hundreds more. Remember this next time someone praises him.

Residents of Hermanus were asked by local authorities not to eat the whale meat they removed from a rotting whale carcass

The municipal manager said that law enforcers were unable to stop the crowds from chopping away at the Bryde's whale carcass.

The whale has been dead for several days before being washed ashore.

The seaside town of Hermanus is known as a whale watching hotspot from July to November.

South Africa has granted Turkey's Karpowership access to the three ports of Ngqura, Durban and Saldanha Bay for a period of 20 years, the transport ministry said on Thursday, as it tries to find solutions to the country's power crisis.

Karpowership aims to generate power on its floating gas ships and distribute it through South Africa's electricity grid. The plan received a boost from President Cyril Ramaphosa last week after he told lawmakers the ships would help ease the prolonged power shortage countrywide.
