FORGIVENESS

In New Testament Jesus Christ taught his devotees how to pray: “My Lord, please forgive me as I forgive others who have trespassed me.” He explained that unless you forgive those who hurt you, God will not forgive you. In forgiving, we are forgiven. Forgiving is the bridge that we must cross to be forgiven. We should not burn down that bridge.

Saint Peter asked Lord Jesus Christ, “If my brother creates very sinful activities against me and hurts me, how many times should I forgive him? Should I forgive him seven times?” Jesus replied, “You should forgive him seventy times seven. It is said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say, if someone slaps on your left cheek, you turn your right cheek and say, ‘Do it on this too.’” He explains what he means—unless you pray for and love those who persecute you, you will not be seen in a positive light by the Lord. Because if we like those people who like us, that is not a great thing. Even the tax-payers do that. To talk to only those people who are our friends, it is very ordinary. Even atheistic people, who have no moral, will do that. Then Jesus said, “Be thou perfect as your Father in the heaven is perfect. Judge not lest you be judged.” He did not just say it. He lived it.

When Jesus was on the crucifix after being beaten, tortured, and blasphemed, just before he entered into state of samadhi , his last prayer was, “My dear father, please forgive them. They do not know what they do.” That is a spiritual principle. It is said, “Forgiveness is the fragrance that a sweet smelling flower like a rose or violet leaves on the heel that has just crushed it.”

One day Buddha was walking through a village. A very angry and rude man came up to him and began insulting him. “You have no right to be teaching others!!!"
he shouted. "You are as stupid
as everyone else. You are nothing but a fake!!" Buddha was not upset by these insults. He just smiled.

The man insulted him again and again but the only reaction he could get back from the Buddha was a smile and silence.
Finally he stomped his feet and left cursing. The disciples were feeling angry and one of the them couldn't keep quiet and asked the Buddha, "Why didn't you reply to the rude man?"

The Buddha replied, If someone offers you a gift, and you refuse to accept it, to whom does the gift belong?" "Of course to the person who brought the gift," replied the disciple. "That is correct," smiled the Buddha.
