Infographic: France's Social Divide

The recent riots in France have brought attention to the long-standing issues faced by disadvantaged neighborhoods in the country. Despite decades of policies aimed at reducing inequalities and improving living conditions, the social divide between these neighborhoods and the rest of the French population remains persistent. These disadvantaged neighborhoods, known as "priority neighborhoods," are defined by their low average income, with less than €11,250 per capita per year. There are 1,514 priority neighborhoods spread across 859 municipalities in France, housing approximately 8% of the population, or around 5.4 million people.
