SURVEY: Most GOP Voters Still Strongly Back Trump; See Who’s No. 2As much as this disturbs the dwindling RINO and GOP establishment factions of the Republican Party, former President Donald Trump remains voters’ top pick for the White House in 2024, according to a new survey.
The right-leaning Trafalgar Group also found a potential Trump successor should he decide one term was enough in D.C.: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The Washington Times reports:
Convention of States Action and pollsters from the right-leaning Trafalgar Group said 49% would certainly back Mr. Trump and another 12% would likely do so, while a fifth was very unlikely to support the Republican who’s spent the past few months insisting the 2020 contest was stolen from him.
If Mr. Trump doesn’t run, then 35% would back Mr. DeSantis, who’s maintained a high profile amid the pandemic response and debates over voting rights.
Pollsters said 15% would support Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, while 10% back former Vice President Mike Pence, 10% like Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah and 6% would support former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
Voters described as “pro-Trump Republicans” are particularly keen on Mr. DeSantis if Mr. Trump stays out, with nearly 48% backing him compared to 20% for Mr. Cruz, in second place.
“Republican voters clearly support anti-establishment candidates and a Trump run in 2024. If President Trump doesn’t run, voters widely prefer Gov. Ron DeSantis. Both men represent a return to constitutional principles, common sense leadership, and the courage to stand against Washington, D.C.,” Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action, a nonprofit that advocates for a smaller federal government, said.
“In contrast, there is little support for the inside-the-Beltway Republicans who are providing tepid opposition to Biden’s far-left agenda.”
Not surprisingly, among the “anti-Trump” faction, Romney is the preferred RINO of choice. More than one-third, or 36 percent, would choose him to lose his third bid to become president, compared with 7% for Haley and 4% for DeSantis. Cruz and Pence each earn about 5.6% of this faction.
Interestingly, the same survey found that voters are about evenly split on President Joe Biden’s performance thus far, with 48.3% approving and 47.5% voicing disapproval, with Democrats strongly supporting his reelection.
But the bottom line is this: If Trump wants to run again in 2024, he’ll get the nomination — and that’s a good thing for the party because it is now more comprised of America First working-class voters than ever before.
And to that end, a member of the anti-Trump group, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyoming, was voted out of her No. 3 leadership position on Wednesday, drawing a scathing rebuke from Trump.
“Liz Cheney is a bitter, horrible human being,” the former president said. “I watched her yesterday and realized how bad she is for the Republican Party. She has no personality or anything good having to do with politics or our Country.
“She is a talking point for Democrats, whether that means the Border, the gas lines, inflation, or destroying our economy,” he continued. “She is a warmonger whose family stupidly pushed us into the never-ending Middle East Disaster, draining our wealth and depleting our Great Military, the worst decision in our Country’s history. I look forward to soon watching her as a Paid Contributor on CNN or MSDNC!”
Given what we’ve seen in Biden’s first 100 days, 2022 can’t get her soon enough, let alone 2024.
