2021-08-14 18:00:09 ​TikTok will disable notifications at 9 p.m. for those between 13 and 15, and at 10 p.m. for those between 16 and 17.

This is one of a range of methods the short video app company has announced in an attempt at tightening safety and privacy controls.

Apple says the new detection tool, called NeuralHash, can identify images of child abuse stored on an iPhone without decrypting the image. It says it has implemented multiple checks to reduce the chance of errors before the images are passed onto the authorities. The tool will roll out in the US this year.

The controversial new features strike at the heart of concerns about privacy, surveillance, and tech-enabled crimes. Apple says these new features preserve privacy as they combat child abuse. They said TikTok is "experimenting with ways to give creators additional formats to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok community."

It's yet another example of the tech industry's most popular platforms swiping ideas from each other. Instagram launched Stories in 2016 and quickly drew comparisons to Snapchat. And in 2020, the Facebook-owned company debuted a TikTok copycat, Instagram Reels. Open / Comment

2021-08-02 21:16:46 ​A huge Tesla battery pack was on fire for four days until firefighters managed to put it out, Australian local authorities said on Monday.

The "Megapack," at an upcoming Australian power project, caught fire in a trial, authorities said.

Firefighters "found a 13-tonne lithium battery inside a shipping container was fully involved," the CFA said. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown but will be investigated, the CFA said.

The battery plant, first announced in 2019, was built by French renewable energy giant Neoen using Tesla's 300 megawatt battery packs. Open / Comment
