If not careful, it can be easy to lose sight of our direction in this battle we’re fighting.
We are prone to forget things and lose focus over time; this is why the Bible says to put on the armor of God daily. We must constantly remember
what we're fighting for and, even more importantly,
Who is fighting for us.
In Matthew 16:16, Peter boldly confessed that Jesus was King when he said,
“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” His unapologetic proclamation of truth is spot on; it's undeniable Peter knew the truth.
However, just seven short verses later in Matthew 16:23, Peter failed to understand God’s plan and began to argue with Jesus for allowing pain and suffering. In that moment, Peter went from unapologetically proclaiming the truth to standing in the way of God's plan.
Jesus, speaking to Peter, said,
“Get thee behind me, Satan: thou are an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” What a contrast in just seven short verses; how quickly Peter forgot who he was talking to! He confessed Jesus as Lord, but almost immediately struggled with following Jesus...because the journey didn’t make sense to him. He didn’t understand why God would allow such pain and trials, but Jesus explained to him that the disconnect was because he wasn’t thinking spiritually.
In this spiritual battle were fighting, much of what God does will not make sense based on our perceived timelines and hopes. Realize that if we understood everything ahead of God's plan, we wouldn’t need faith.
If we could understand the mind and plans of God in our tiny, finite minds, He wouldn’t be worthy of our worship. God's ways our higher than our ways. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (see Isaiah 55:8-9) When it doesn't make sense, trust Him.
Right after Jesus rebukes Peter’s lack of faith, He gives an invitation to all:
“…If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (vs. 24).
This battle will not be easy. It won’t be comfortable. It won’t always make sense; however, if we trust God to lead and guide us, we will see His power unfold in ways we would never see if we were attempting to fight in our own understanding and strength.
Step out in faith today and allow God to guide your steps. It may not make sense. It may not be safe. But if it's God's plan, it will be worth it.
God desires to do so much more through us than we realize.
Stay focused on what we're fighting for and Who is fighting for us!
