A miniature nuclear reactor for a single city
The designers of the startup NuScale Power presented the idea of a modular nuclear reactor with enough power for a small city.
The reactor is so small (no more than two buses) that it does not require huge protective enclosures or even an exclusion zone. And the design does not differ much from the standard one. It is just optimized for maximum efficiency and safety. And the modularity of such reactors will make it possible to create power plants of any capacity.
The project has already received approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build a test plant in Idaho, which is scheduled to start up in 2026.
