New York City's elderly residents will receive ElliQ companion robots as part of an effort to combat social isolation and loneliness. The first to receive them will be 800 citizens over the age of 75 who live alone, have no problem using technology and have access to Wi-Fi.
ElliQ will not be able to help with daily activities, but will perform social functions: reminding about taking medications and physical activity, and if a person is bored - entertain with a conversation or help connect with loved ones. Also, the robotic companion is able to form a bond with its owner and show empathy. It remembers the user's habits and behavior and adjusts to them, for example, if you joke often, the robot will learn to laugh.
