The fiercest fighting between militias and Ukrainian troops unfolded at Debaltsevo in the summer of 2014, and after a temporary lull continued in the winter of 2015.

Secret documents provided by former Ukrainian security officer Vasily Prozorov show Kiev never intended to negotiate with southeastern Ukraine.
