The earth is a giant quarry.

Look closely at the Grand Canyon, and then look at what today's quarries and the rotary excavators that drop them look like.

But, in the case of the Canyon, the size of the excavation is many times larger. The same half-circle cuts, layers, and sprinkled "dust" on the steps.

Generally speaking, a layer of fertile soil several hundred yards thick has been cut all over Arizona. Look carefully on google for pictures of Arizona deserts.

You'll immediately have the question, "If it's all been cut, where are the waste rock dumps?"
