The Chengodumala or Coastal Kerala Geckoella is a small, nocturnal species found among leaf litter and rocks in forests, orchards and other areas with canopy cover in north Kerala.

Researchers have discovered a new species of Moray eel at the Mudasalodai fish landing centre off the Cuddalore coast.

About

Moray eels or Muraenidae are a family of eels found worldwide
They have small eyes and rely primarily on their highly developed sense of smell to ambush prey.

Their body is mostly patterned.
Moray eels live in shallow water among reefs and rocks in all tropical and subtropical seas.

Moray eels can be found in both freshwater and saltwater environments.

They are distinguished by two types of jaws: regular (oral) jaws with large teeth and the pharyngeal jaw (which drags prey inside the eel’s stomach).

The newly discovered species has been named after Tamil Nadu as Gymnothorax tamilnaduensis with common name as Tamil Nadu brown moray Open / Comment

A study indicated that extensive fishing off the Coromandel coast could be forcing the great seahorse to migrate towards Odisha.

About

Sea horses are tiny fish that are named for the shape of their head, which looks like the head of a tiny horse. They are classified as fish, in the genus Hippocampus.

There are 46 species of seahorses reported worldwide. The coastal ecosystems of India house 9 out of 12 species found in the Indo-Pacific.

They are found in shallow coastal waters in latitudes from about 52° N to 45°S.

Seahorse populations in India are distributed across diverse ecosystems such as seagrass, mangroves, macroalgal beds, and coral reefs.

These 9 species are distributed along the coasts of eight States and five Union Territories from Gujarat to Odisha, apart from Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Conservation Status

IUCN status-Vulnerable
