Mucormycosis
Government take steps to ramp up availability of Amphotericin B – to fight Mucormycosis.
A sudden increase in demand has been observed in some states for Amphotericin B which is being actively prescribed by physicians to patients suffering from Mucormycosis, a post COVID complication.
GOI is therefore engaging with the manufacturers to ramp up production of the drug.
The supply position is expected to improve with extra imports of this drug and increase in its production domestically.
What is Mucormycosis?
◆ Mucormycosis has been observed in a number of Covid-19 patients recently.
◆ It is a rare but serious fungal infection.
◆ The disease, dubbed ‘black fungus’, often manifests in the skin and also affects the lungs and the brain.
◆ It is caused by a group of moulds known as mucormycetes present naturally in the environment.
It mainly affects people who are on medication for health problems that reduces their ability to fight environmental pathogens.
Sinuses or lungs of such individuals get affected after they inhale fungal spores from the air. It can also occur on the skin after a cut, burn, or other type of skin injury.
Usually, mucormycetes does not pose a major threat to those with a healthy immune system.
The symptoms of mucormycosis depend on where in the body the fungus is growing.
Warning signs include pain and redness around the eyes or nose, with fever, headache, coughing, shortness of breath, bloody vomits, and altered mental status.
Infection with mucormycetes should be suspected when there is nasal blockade or congestion, nasal discharge (blackish/bloody).
While it is treated with antifungals, mucormycosis may eventually require surgery.#GS3 #Health

National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC)
Cabinet Secretary chaired National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) meeting on Cyclone Tauktae.
About the National Crisis Management Committee:
◆ The NCMC is a committee set up by the Government of India in the wake of a natural calamity for effective coordination and implementation of relief measures and operations.
◆ It is headed by the Cabinet Secretary.
◆ In India, the NCMC and the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) are the two major committees involved in top-level decision making with respect to Disaster Management (DM).
Key functions of the NCMC:
◆ Overseeing the command, control and coordination of the disaster response.
◆ Giving directions to the crisis management group as necessary.
◆ The committee is chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and has the secretaries of various ministries or departments with disaster management responsibilities as members.
Cyclone Tauktae:
◆ Tauktae is the fourth cyclone in consecutive years to have developed in the Arabian Sea, that too in the pre-monsoon period (April to June).
◆ Tauktae has been intensifying very rapidly. From a depression formed in the southeast Arabian Sea on May 14 morning, it strengthened into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ by the early hours of May 16.
◆ The IMD has further predicted that Cyclone Tauktae will turn into an extremely severe cyclonic storm.
◆ The coastal districts of Maharashtra and Gujarat are on high alert and people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas.
◆ Gale-force winds, heavy rainfall and high tidal waves swept the coastal belt of Kerala, Karnataka and Goa leaving about ten people dead and about a hundred damaged houses.
◆ The cyclone is expected to hit Gujarat on the 17th and the forecast is that it will reduce in intensity then#GS3 #Management

National Technology Day
India celebrates May 11 as ‘National Technology Day’.
The day celebrates the achievements and contributions of Indians to science and technology.
The day commemorates India conducting three successful nuclear tests at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan under Operation Shakti in 1998.
The National Technology Day was observed for the first time on May 11, 1999.
Usually, a large-scale event is organised in New Delhi for the National Technology Day celebrations and the President is invited to be the chief guest. He confers awards to scientists and honours them for their achievements.
The National Technology Day 2021 theme is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”.

Goa Maritime Symposium (GMS) – 2021
The Indian Navy hosted ‘GMS-21’ under the aegis of the Naval War College, Goa.
The event was an online one due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Naval representatives from 13 Indian Ocean Littoral countries, which included India, Bangladesh, Comoros, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand participated in the virtual event.
The theme for GMS-21 was focused on “Maritime Security and Emerging Non-Traditional Threats: A Case for Proactive Role for IOR Navies,” with emphasis on capacity building amongst the IOR Navies to tackle emerging common maritime threats.
The symposium will play a constructive role in bringing together the stakeholders who have a role in evolving strategies, policies and implementation mechanisms on the issues of common interest in the maritime domain.
