2021-05-04 05:30:06 India Energy Dashboards

The India Energy Dashboards Version 2.0 was launched by NITI Aayog.

About India Energy Dashboards:

◆ India Energy Dashboards (IED) is an endeavour to provide single-window access to the energy data for the country.

◆ Energy data published/provided by Central Electricity Authority, Coal Controller’s Organisation, and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is compiled in the Dashboards.

◆ NITI Aayog had launched the Version 1.0 in 2017.

The features of version 2.0 are:

◆ Provides time series data from FY 2005-06 until FY 2019-20.

◆ Enables easy downloading of data into convenient spreadsheet formats in a cleaner, more intuitive way.

◆ Provides data at sub-yearly frequencies as well.

API linked data from Saubhagya, UJALA, PRAAPTI, and Vidyut PRAVAH has been incorporated in the portal.

◆ A ‘Feedback and Suggestions’ forum for the engagement of energy data user community has been incorporated.

◆ There is a semi-automated workflow/issue-tracking system for managing periodic updates to the IED.

◆ The portal is public, free of cost, and doesn’t require login credentials to access the data.

Background:

Reliable, robust and validated data are critical for informed planning, policy development and investment decision.

◆ Energy projections are key as the country moves ahead to build a sustainable tomorrow.

◆ India has five energy ministries and multiple energy-consuming sectoral ministries.

India can no longer afford to operate in a siloed energy data paradigm and it is in this context that the NITI Aayog has come up with the dashboard.

2021-05-02 09:31:40 World Malaria Day

25th April is observed every year as World Malaria Day.

About World Malaria Day:

◆ The first ‘World Malaria Day’ was observed on 25 April, 2008 led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and many governments all over the world.

◆ The theme for the 2021 World Malaria Day is ‘Reaching the zero malaria target’.

◆ The ‘Africa Malaria Day’ used to be observed on 25 April from 2011. The World Malaria Day evolved from this observance in order to emphasise the global health impact of this dreaded disease.

About Malaria:

◆ Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite.

What causes malaria?

◆ It is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito.
Infected mosquitoes carry the Plasmodium parasite. When this mosquito bites a human, the parasite is released into the bloodstream.

◆ Once the parasites are inside the body, they travel to the liver, where they mature. After several days, the mature parasites enter the bloodstream and begin to infect red blood cells.

◆ Within 48 to 72 hours, the parasites inside the red blood cells multiply, causing the infected cells to burst open.

◆ The parasites continue to infect red blood cells, resulting in symptoms that occur in cycles that last two to three days at a time.

Malaria is typically found in tropical and subtropical climates where the parasites can live. It is most prevalent in Africa, followed by Asia and Latin America. It also affects people in the Middle East and Europe albeit to a much smaller degree.

Symptoms:

◆ Symptoms include shaking chills, high fever, profuse sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, anaemia, muscle pain, convulsions, etc.

◆ Malaria can cause a number of life-threatening complications such as swelling of the brain’s blood vessels, organ failure, low blood sugar.

Treatment:

A vaccine for malaria has not yet been formulated.

◆ But, it can be cured with prescription medicines, depending upon the case.

◆ In India, the National Malaria Control Programmes conducts programs and takes measured to eradicate this disease from India where it is a serious public health issue. Nearly 95% of the population resides in areas endemic to malaria.

◆ Unfortunately, most areas in India are prone to malaria except areas that are at a high altitude of 2000-2500 m.

2021-05-01 16:31:34 Virafin

Virafin gets emergency nod.

DBT-BIRAC supported ‘Virafin’ from Zydus Cadila gets emergency nod for treating moderate COVID-19 infections in adults.

The restricted emergency use approval was given by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).

Virafin is a pegylated interferon alpha-2b(PegIFN), which when subcutaneously injected to the patient in the early stages of infection, resulted in their faster recovery.

For the development of Virafin, Zydus appreciated the support provided by DBT-BIRAC COVID 19 Research Consortium through NBM, for conducting the Phase II human clinical trial studies.

The studies confirmed the safety, tolerability and efficacy of Virafin.

The studies also reported that Virafin reduces viral load and aids in managing the disease in a better way, such as reduction in the need for supplemental oxygen, thereby reducing the respiratory tension caused due to low oxygen levels.

Phase III clinical trial studies reported that a larger proportion of patients when administered subcutaneously with Virafin turned out to be RT-PCR negative by day 7, apart from faster recovery as compared to other antiviral agents.
