2022-02-05 11:45:37 IMT Interview experience

Feb 5, morning slot – around 30-35 mins (exceeded the timeline and thus the second panelist cut me in my last answer to get to the next candidate)

Profile: B.Com/FRM/CFA L2, 2 years work ex in financial risk domain in AU Small Finance Bank and Deloitte India (1 year each)

Overall Feel: Very conversational and friendly. My system got logged off due to power issues in between and even then, they were very friendly.

Two panelists – both male.

M1: Tell us where you are joining from?

Me: I’m joining from Jaipur, capital city of Rajasthan

M1: Oh Raj is very pleasant this time of the year right? You must be enjoying it

Me: Yes sir, it’s really pleasant – at least in the morning time. Won’t comment on the chilly nights

M1: (laughed) You have been working for a while now?

Me: Yes sir, almost 2 years now

M1: So tell me about your role and work and what are you interested in outside of work

Me: Explained

M1: Very interesting profile. Can you tell me your last drawn salary?

Me: Told (also took the opportunity to slip in that I got a performance appraisal)

M1: You’ll be joining us for finance specialization?

Me: yes sir

M1: Since you have already done FRM and will finish your CFA soon, why are you doing MBA? What are you looking to learn here?

Me: Explained

M1: Let me ask you some direct questions, answer in a couple of words only. Can you properly analyze an annual report of a company? Including all the financial statements? Yes or No ?

Me: No sir

M1: (shocked expression) Okay so tell me what can you understand in an annual report? Till what extend can you analyze it

Me: Explained (on the lines of that I understand the ratios and metrices and what are their implications on the financial health of a company. However, not well versed with every line of accounting statements so if something was amiss and not matching between them, I’ll likely not be able to catch them)

M1: Thank you for being candid. Say I have to give out a loan, will you be able to help me in deciding whether I should give the loan to this person or not?

Me: I can help you to the extend of my theoretical knowledge from what I studied in FRM. However, I have never worked on the Credit Risk side of Risk Management; my experience revolves more around Liquidity Risk

M1: Okay how good can you assess the stability of a bank from a liquidity pov and how will you do it ?

Me: Explained in detail. (around 3-4 mins)

M2 : Let’s say I have no understanding of risk management or finance. How will you explain the risk management world to me?
Me: Used an analogy from real life since I wanted to use zero financial terms

M2 then asked around 3-4 questions on that analogy. The questions basically translated to:

(i) If I am a risk seeker and I want risk in my life, will risk management slow me down?

(ii) If I am very conservative, I don’t take any risks at all in my life – then how will risk management help me? Is it useless for me?

Profile: BE Mech/ 32 months SAP FI experience in Infosys
Overall Feel: Very conversational and friendly.
Two panelists – both male.

M1: How are you?
M1: Tell me something, that’s not in the profile you submitted
Me: Told them about my personality and my strengths
M1: Which specialization are you interested in
Me: HR
M1: You recently resigned, what did you do in the break? (Gap of 8 months)
Me: Told them that I did an HR course from Upgrad. Also regarding the MH CET and how it got delayed. And how I decided to attempt CAT.
M1: What did you study in the HR course?
Me: Told them regarding the topics
M1: Why do people think that HR is a cost center?
Me: Told them that HR is not a cost center and then regarding Strategic human resource management.
M1: Does org structure create company culture or company culture will create org structure?
Me: Explained how both of them are inter-related. And how one would direct other in various scenarios. I gave them example of Upworks where they have two verticals: one for achievers and other for leaders.
M1: Are you saying that managers and leaders are not top performers?
Me: No sir, the structure is based on McClelland needs theory and explained the need for power and need for achievement.
M1: if you have two candidates first one is an achiever but not ethical, the second one is ethical but an average performer. Who will you choose?
Me: Told them I will ask the top performer if he will strictly follow the code of conduct. If he declines, then I will go with the ethical person and train him. As we can train employees for the job but ethics can’t be taught. Also told them regarding org values and cultural fit
M1: Ok, then he said why do everyone say that HR make rangolis? Do you like to make rangolis?
Me: No sir I don’t. Told them how HR work with the line managers and regarding the performance management. And explained that multiple HR functions are behind the scene which usually the employees don’t see or notice.

M2: Good Morning.
Me: Good Morning
M2: You make it sound like HR managers do everything?
Me: Told them about other processes. And concluded with: HR managers make sure all the employees in these functions are motivated and HR supports all the function.

Me: I didn’t read about this, so tried to explain with dark triad personality traits.

M2: Asked me how to travel from Itarsi (I am currently staying in Itarsi) to a place in southern India.
Me: asked where in southern India
M2: asked me to choose a location.
Me: I chose Tirupati and told him how to travel.

M2: Thank you Rugved,
Me: Thank you
