Use the built-in GIF panel
- Open a chat where you are allowed to send messages.
- On Android or iPhone, open Telegram’s emoji/sticker controls beside the message field and choose the GIF tab. The exact icon and position depend on your app version.
- On Telegram Desktop, open the emoji/sticker panel and switch to GIFs.
- Search with a short description of the reaction you want, then select a suitable result.
Telegram updated its GIF search in 2026, including broader language support. You do not need to add a separate bot for ordinary GIF search. If an older tutorial shows a different provider or panel layout, use the controls in your current official app.
Add a caption or save a favourite
In supported mobile versions, press and hold a GIF in the panel to open options such as Add Caption or Edit before sending. Review the preview and destination, then send. If these controls are missing, update the app or send a separate text message alongside the animation.
To keep an animation for later, open the menu of a GIF in a conversation and look for the option to save it to GIFs. A saved GIF belongs to your Telegram GIF collection; that is different from downloading a file into your phone’s Photos app or a computer folder.
Send your own animation
Use the attachment menu to select a GIF file. If you are sending a short video, the media editor may let you mute it and send it as a looping animation. Check the preview: a regular video with sound is not the same result. Telegram may represent animations internally as silent video, so a downloaded animation is not guaranteed to have a .gif extension.
If GIFs will not send or play
- Check your connection and whether the upload has finished.
- Try Saved Messages to distinguish an app problem from restrictions in one group.
- Check the group’s permissions: administrators can restrict media or GIFs.
- If animation does not play automatically, check your media and power-saving settings before sending duplicate copies.
For finding a discussion where the animation is welcome, browse the Telegram group directory and read the group’s rules first. A GIF appropriate in a private conversation may be distracting in a work or support chat.
