• To get Indian cooperation in the world war-2 ,the viceroy, Lord Linlithgow
announced the August Offer,1940.

• It proposed Dominion status for the India.

• Expansion of Viceroy’s executive council.

• Setting of Constituent assembly after the war.

• In the constituent assembly Mainly Indians would decide the constitution
according to their social, economic and political conceptions.

• No future constitution to be adopted without the consent of minorities.

• Congress rejected this offer as it demanded ‘Purna swaraj’ instead of
‘Dominion status’.

• Muslim league welcomed this Offer.

• This Offer was historic in a way that for the first Time, the inherent right of
Indians to frame their own constitution was recognised and congress’
demand for contituent assembly was conceded.

• In july,1941 , the Viceroy’s executive council was enlarged to give the Indians
a majority of 8 out of 12 for the first time.

• An all party conference met in february 1928 and appointed a sub committee under the chairmanship of Motilal Nehru to draft a constitution

•Other members of committee - Tej bahadur sapru , Subhash Chandra Bose, M.S.Aney , Mangal ,Ali imam, Shuab Qureshi , G.R.Pradhan

• first major attempt by Indians to draft a constitutional framework for the country

• majority of members favoured 'dominion status' but a few wanted "complete independence"

• Report was finalised by August 1928

• Dominion status
• rejection of separate electorates
• linguistic provinces
• Nineteen(19) fundamental rights
• responsible government at centre and in provinces
• Full protection to cultural and religious interests of muslims

GANGA RIVER SYSTEM

• The Ganga is the most important river of India both from the point of views of its basin and cultural significance.

• It rises in the Gangotri glacier near Gaumukh (3900 m) in the Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, where it is known as Bhagirathi.

• The Bhagirathi meets The Alaknanda at Devprayag. hereafter it is known as the GANGA.

• Before Alaknanda meets Bhagirathi at Devprayag, Mandakini meets Alaknanda at Rudraprayag.

• The Ganga enters the Plains at Haridwar.

• It has total length of 2525 km. Uttarakhand (110 km), Uttar pradesh (1450 km), Bihar( 445 km), West Bengal (520 km).

• Left Bank Tributaries - Ramganga, Gomati, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, Mahananda.

• Right Bank Tributaries - Yamuna(longest tributary), Son

• Distributary - Hoogly river

• In Bangladesh The Ganga is known as Padma.

• Finally it empties into Bay of Bengal near the Sagar Island.
