Saudi Arabia plans to spend $100–$200 billion to create a desert utopia with no automobiles, no streets, and zero net carbon emissions. "The Line," a 106-mile-long band of hyperconnected villages running from the highlands of northwest Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea, was announced this month by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. But, unlike today's polluting metropolises, this 1 million-person city will be fueled by "100% clean energy," with people transported via "autonomous mobility solutions" and ultra-high-speed transportation. According to Bin Salman, the design would protect 95 percent of the region's natural ecology. According to developers, the Line would create 380,000 new employment and increase Saudi Arabia's GDP by $48 billion.

Asus has entered the market for kitchen electronic devices in the United States. Its debut product is the PureGo PD100, which has an accompanying app, Bluetooth connectivity, and wireless charging.
The manufacturer describes the PureGo PD100 as a "clean fruit and vegetable detector. The way to use it is to wash fruits or vegetables in a container of water and then dip the PD100 into that water to find out how dirty it is. The PD100 can measure the concentration of pesticides and other contaminants in the water. If the water is dirty, replace it with clean water, wash the fruits and vegetables again, and repeat the measurement. The iterations should be repeated until the device reports that there are no more contaminants in the water.

Cities are spending huge sums to maintain street lighting, and the startup Allumen is working on a solution that promises to turn trees into light sources. To do this, scientists want to "cross" plants with bioluminescent algae.
Allumen hopes to find out in the near future which genes allow the algae to luminesce. Then scientists plan to apply genetic editing technology and endow the plants with the properties of microalgae. The luminous trees will gradually replace the street lights on which many cities spend a large part of their budgets.
The technology is in its early stages, but bioethicists are already alarmed. The impact of genome-edited trees on the ecosystem has not been studied and it is unclear exactly how they will affect other plants, birds, insects, and animals, as well as humans.
