“As a young convert, I heard my pastor say in a morning service that Christians could expect to raise the dead back to life. At first that thought left me dumbfounded. Then I became very excited about the prospect. I went to him after the service and talked to him about this power of which he had spoken. When I asked him if he had ever raised any dead people, he had to admit that he hadn’t. Still, he insisted that it had to be possible in our day because the Bible records Christ’s injunction to His disciples to raise the dead. I believed my pastor’s testimony and went off on my bicycle in search of a dead person to raise.
After several hours of searching, I came upon a compound where a little girl had died a few hours before. It was the home of Margaret, who was to become my wife. The house was full of mourning relatives.
Many of them were openly weeping. “What’s going on?” I inquired….“She was ill for several days, and this morning she died. She kept having convulsions, and the local doctors could do nothing to help her.
“Where is the baby now?” I asked. “There” she said, gesturing toward the bedroom. “We have already bathed the body and bought the coffin for her burial.” A feeling of righteous indignation came over me, and I turned to the father of the baby. “The God I serve can bring your baby back to life” I said. “Will you permit me to pray for her?” Startled, the father agreed, though he was not a Christian.”
To be continued…
