3 START-UPS TO TRY IN 2022

1. Food truck

Opening a food truck is a great startup idea for entrepreneurs with a background in cooking and a novel idea. It's less to worry about than an entire restaurant and can be done with just one or two people

2. Start a business for organizing

Some people are natural-born organizers, their homes are tidy and everything has a place, others aren't so lucky and have a harder time being organized. So if you have a knack for organizing, you could start a business offering those services to those who need it. Organizing kitchen pantries, closets, bookshelves, and more are all options you could offer customers at your new business.

3. Do interior design for young professionals

If you've got an eye for decorating you could start an interior design business offering your services at an hourly rate virtually to young professionals looking for inspiration

India’s fastest start-up to hit billion-dollar status is already profitable, says founder

Indian start-up Mensa Brands has catapulted to billion-dollar unicorn status in just six months and, in a more rarified feat, is already profitable, its founder told CNBC.

The direct-to-consumer brand aggregator this week became the fastest company in India’s history to hit the coveted threshold after closing its $135 million Series B funding round at a $1 billion valuation.

The financing, which was led by Falcon Edge Capital, takes total money raised in debt and equity to $300 million.

“Within the first six months of operation we’re actually profitable, and we continue to intend to run this business in a profitable manner,” founder Ananth Narayanan told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia” on Thursday.

4 Ways Emerging Markets Startups Can Make The Leap Into Mature Markets

The unfolding digital transformation presents a huge opportunity for emerging market startups to bring their innovation and tech expertise to the table, especially as foreign investors flock to emerging markets at the fastest pace since 2013.

Companies in these regions have the financial backing and diverse perspective to branch out, but they first need to know how to make that leap, starting with these four areas:

1. Make your product replicable and scalable

2. Time your entry carefully

3. Don’t bootstrap funding

4. Foster strategic partnerships

The Year Of The Decacorn: 2021 Shatters Records For Number Of New Startups Valued At $10B+

More new startups valued at $10 billion or above have been minted in 2021—far more than in any prior year, and double the number created in 2020, which set the previous record for new “decacorns,” as these highly valued companies are known.

All told, 30 companies have been newly valued at a decacorn valuation in 2021 so far, Crunchbase data shows. This contrasts with half that count at 15 in 2020 and five new decacorns in 2019.

3 Things You Should Focus On As An Early-Revenue Entrepreneur

Congratulations, you have initial customers and you got funded by a VC. You have now climbed on a rollercoaster that is gunning forward at a speed of around $300K per month, with tracks that are not yet fully laid out.

The tracks will run out in approximately 12-24 months, which is usually not long enough to become financially sustainable.

With a limited ability to extend this period, all you can do is raise more money or generate more revenue. Which brings us to Focus No. 1.

_1. Revenue over funding
2. Monetization over customer acquisition
3. Large market over niche use cases

"Mattress-in-a-box" company Casper announced this week that it was being acquired, taking the company private less than two years after the company's IPO. The deal values Casper somewhere around $300m, way down on the frothy $1.1bn valuation from 2 years ago.

Big Money Rounds Flood Amazon Aggregator Space

While many of us will spend a fair amount of money on Amazon this holiday season for gifts, venture capitalists and others are instead putting their money into companies that buy up brands on the Goliath’s marketplace.

Just on Tuesday, San Francisco-based Heyday announced it locked up a $555 million Series C that reportedly valued the company at more than $1 billion. That round is far from the only big round in the space, as a wave of startups have raised huge sums of both equity and debt in order to buy smaller merchants on large marketplaces such as Amazon, Walmart or a variety of other platforms both domestic and international.

“No question, there’s a tremendous investor appetite for aggregators right now,” said Carlos Cashman, co-founder and CEO of Thrasio—which last month announced the initial closing of a $1 billion Series D at a reported valuation of between $5 billion and $10 billion.

We'd rather not be charting about inflation when there's so much else going on in the world, but when the data is doing something it hasn't done for more than 30 years, it's hard to ignore.

Consumer prices in the US are up more than 6.2% in the last 12 months — a reading last seen in December 1990. So if you just got a 5% pay rise, congrats, but also sorry — you're probably poorer in real terms than you you used to be.

Stuff that's gone up the most

Energy
. Gasoline prices are up almost 50% on this time last year.

Used vehicles. Prices for second-hand cars and vehicles were up 26% year-on-year.

Food. Food as a category was up "only" 5%, but high-protein foods like meats. poultry, fish and eggs are up 12%.
