Another thing I get asked a lot, especially from friends, is why I keep saying the things I do, despite the fact that it puts a large target on my back, and despite the fact that there are many people who I overwhelmingly agree with but hate the fact that I’m the one saying it and look for any reason to claim we have substantive disagreements to harp on while making me “the real enemy” or whatever.
I don’t say what I do because it’s popular, or because it’s winning me any friends, or because I think anyone wants to hear it, but because it’s true.
I could’ve kept my mouth shut and not spoken out about anything and kept my nice job. But I didn’t. I paid a severe cost to my livelihood, my wellbeing, and even my friendships by speaking out. And the funny thing is, to some, even losing those things is further proof of whatever conspiracy.
It’s worth pointing out is that there is a lot of ego in political spaces. People try to compete for the most followers, subscribers, Patreon donations, viewers, listeners, whatever. They see you as competition. And therefore, they try to destroy you in any way they can.
Some of these people are doing it because it’s just as simple as “oh, this person has more followers, they’re a threat to me,” but I wouldn’t discount the idea that there are people out there whose entire purpose is to undermine any idea of unity. Perhaps they’re literal federal agents. Perhaps they just do what a federal agent would do and work with the SPLC or the ADL to try to take people down out of their own volition and malice towards others. Who knows. Either way, they’re not honest actors and shouldn't be treated as such.
