I've been writing rather positively about the job market in Singapore this year but now it's time for a cautionary tale, as not everyone is doing equally well.
Some companies - including those which made headlines in the past 2 years - have either frozen hiring or announced layoffs to cut expenses.
We're going through a post-pandemic readjustment, with the companies which benefited from lockdowns that kept us all glued to screens and internet now forced to optimize their spending, as their growth may have slowed and easy money dried up.
According to a layoffs tracker 17,000 people working for 71 startups around the world lost their jobs in May - which was by far the worst result since mid-2020. And June is shaping up to be equally bad.
But even more established businesses are letting staff go - including Shopee and Singapore-based giant Crypto.com.
