The clouds of asperatus look ominous, but this kind is more assumed than foreshadowing a catastrophe. Scientists have not yet figured out why they appear.

There is something in space called the Zone of Avoidance.

The name sounds like something out of a horror movie. In 1878, it was originally called the Zone of Few Nebulae.

But what is it? It's the area of the sky that is obscured by the Milky Way.

The interstellar dust and stars in the galactic plane of the Milky Way obstructs our view by around 20% of the extragalactic sky.

Galaxy catalogues are usually incomplete in this area.

Even with modern advances like infrared and X-Ray astronomy, around 10% of the sky still remains difficult to survey. Extragalactic objects can be confused with stars in our Milky Way.

Infrared and radio regions of the electromagnetic spectrum have shown that many external galaxies lie beyond it.

The area of Saturn's rings is almost 1000 times the surface area of the Moon. But at the same time, the mass of the Moon is 5,000 times the mass of Saturn's rings. This discrepancy appears due to the small thickness of the rings - in some places they are no thicker than 10 meters.

The animation shows the number of rings of Saturn, the total mass of which would be equal to the mass of the Moon.

Are there any stars in space that could explode and harm planet Earth?

Scientists say we have to be within 50 light-years of a supernova for it to affect Earth. Iif a supernova exploded within 30 light-years, would severely deplete the base of the ocean food chain.

There are possibly 2000 stars within that range, and 133 of them are visible to the naked eye. But astronomers say with certainty that none of them are massive enough to explode and harm Earth. There has been no supernova within 50 light-years in the known history of humankind.

The closest star that could turn into a Supernova is IK Pegasi B which is 150 light-years away.

Nobody knows how often supernovas erupt in our Milky Way galaxy.

One of the funniest "troubles" in space: sometimes astronauts get stuck at one point, unable to catch on to anything.

Jupiter's rings in infrared light

The rings of Jupiter were discovered in 1979, they are much darker than the rings of Saturn, and consist of small stone particles, so they cannot be seen in a conventional telescope.

Transit method of searching for exoplanets. This is one of the ways to detect distant planets. A planet passing between an observer and its star causes an eclipse of the star.
