Hearing you loud and clear

Listening to spacecraft around the solar system is a global effort. Introducing DSS-53: the newest member to our Deep Space Network (DSN), a collection of giant radio antennas positioned throughout the world to ensure constant communication with spacecraft.

The facilities are spaced evenly apart across the globe – approximately 120º apart – in California, Spain, and Australia. Our newest addition is located in Madrid. Each DSN facility takes turns picking up and passing off communications as spacecraft travel closer or farther away.

On April 12, 1961, the Vostok spacecraft with an astronaut on board was launched into Earth orbit for the first time. So Yuri Gagarin became the first person in the world to visit space. His flight lasted 108 minutes.

This event marked the beginning of the era of space exploration and gave rise to the rapid flourishing of the space industry

Cosmonautics Day is celebrated not only in Russia, but also in many corners of the globe.

The Voyager spacecraft is flying at a speed of 56,000 km/h.

Even at such a staggering speed, it will take 80,000 years to reach the nearest star Alpha Centauri (4 holy years from the Sun).

So how far can the human eye see?

Earth's surface curves out of sight at a distance of 3.1 miles

Now if the Earth were flat, which it's NOT, on a dark night, you could even see a candle flame flickering up to 30 miles.

There's no limit to how deep the eye can see into space as long as the object is big and bright enough to be seen.

The record for the most distant object capable of being seen is held by this object: GRB 080319B. It was a Gamma-ray burst and had a peak magnitude of 5.7 and remained visible to human eyes for approximately 30 seconds.
It was 7.5 billion light-years away. Those photos started their journey to us before the Earth was even formed. "The photons started their journey 7.5 billion years ago."

Until this gamma-ray burst event, the Triangulum Galaxy, at a distance of about 2.9 million light-years, was the most distant permanent object visible to the naked eye, although others contend the Andromeda Galaxy is the most distant object that can be seen with the unaided eye.

In the context of special relativity, time cannot be separated from the three dimensions of space, because the observed rate at which time passes for an object depends on the object’s velocity relative to the observer.

General relativity also explains how gravitational fields can slow the passage of time for an object as seen by an observer outside the field.

The most distant galaxy on record has been spotted by an international team of astronomers.

It's called HD1 and it's some 13.5 billion light-years away. It dates from around 300 million years after the Big Bang.

HD1 may be forming more than 100 stars every single year. This is at least 10 times higher than other starburst galaxies like M82.

Astronomers hope to obtain more clarity using the James Webb Space Telescope when it becomes fully operational.

One thousand times more powerful than Earth’s northern lights, Jupiter’s aurora is seen here in ultraviolet light by nasahubble telescope during a transit of Jovian moon, Europa.

This time-lapse video of the vivid auroras in Jupiter's atmosphere was created using far-ultraviolet-light observations made on May 19, 2016, with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard NASA 's Hubble Space Telescope.

The movement of tectonic plates on Earth over billions of years

Continents have visited all places of the planet, and plates have shifted by centimeter per year.
