The current situation in the economy is notable not only for world-changing events happening, but also for unusual reaction of different assets to the news. One of them is the Japanese yen. The currency that traders recognized as a safe-haven asset plunged to the lows of 2015 against the US dollar. On Monday, USDJPY tested the high of 125. The reason behind such weak performance of the Japanese yen lies in Bank of Japan’s actions to contain rising bond yields. While the US Treasury yields keep soaring, the BOJ offered to buy an unlimited amount of government bonds for the first days of this week. This move softened the JPY against the USD. Given the overbought conditions of the pair, a correction towards 120 seems very likely. On the other hand, 125 remains an important milestone. Open / Comment

The RBA cash rate – March 1, 05:30 MT time
BOC Overnight Rate – March 2, 17:00 MT time
US NFP and Unemployment Rate – March 4, 15:30 MT time

It's time for the Reserve Bank of Australia to update its cash rate and make a rate statement. Since November 2020, the cash rate remained flat at 0.1% without any surprising movements. If the actual rate is higher than “Forecast”, the currency will benefit.

The Bank of Canada will release the overnight rate. After the last Overnight Rate release, CAD lost 1200 pts to USD. This shows that the currency may need stronger actions from BOC. The higher-than-expected rate will affect the currency positively.

Now, the US unemployment rate is close to pre-pandemic times. As for NFP, the result was greater than expected – 467K vs. 110K. After the last month’s release, the USD boosted and held high for several days. If actual numbers beat expectations – the USD will rise.
