Louis-François Casas was an outstanding French landscape painter, sculptor, architect, and Orientalist of the 18th century.
After studying painting at the Paris Academy, Casas goes to Italy with one of his patrons, where he makes many drawings of historical sites on the Apennine Peninsula. The ruins of ancient civilizations greatly fascinate Casas. The artist has time to visit the Ottoman Empire, travel all over the Middle East, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. The result was about 250 drawings, which show the state of famous and not so famous buildings at the end of the 18th century.
