2021-07-16 23:55:58 Pillow Lavas Wadi Jizzi. Oman | #Geology #Discovery

In the Hajar Mountains of Oman, pillow lavas occur in what geologists call the Semail Ophiolite — a large slab of the oceanic crust and the underlying upper mantle that was uplifted and exposed above the sea level. Covering an area of approximately 100,000 square km, it is the largest and best exposed of its kind in the world.

Pillow Lavas found in the Hajar Mountains of Oman. Pillow lavas form when hot lava flows into water and cools rapidly forming a skin over the still molten rock. Underneath the skin, lava continues to flow forming a lobe, until the pressure of the magma becomes sufficient to rupture the skin and start the formation of a new lobe. This process produces a series of interconnecting pillow-shaped mounds of rock that look like toothpaste squeezed from a tube. Pillow lavas are found not only in the ocean but also under glaciers that overlie volcanoes. The presence of pillow lavas indicate that the area was once under water.

2021-07-16 16:41:21 Hedgehog Rocks Formation Tassili N'ejjer/Algeria

The Tassili n'Ajjer national park is a mountainous region of the Sahara Desert, and amongst its many unusual rock formations is this rather uncanny creature

Tassili n'Ajjer is a heavily eroded sandstone rock formation in the Algerian section of the Sahara Desert, situated on vast plateau in south-east Algeria at the borders of Libya, Niger and Mali, covering an area of 72,000 sq. km.

The geological conformation of Tassili n'Ajjer includes Precambrian crystalline elements and sedimentary sandstone successions of great paleo-geographical and paleo-ecological interest, The range is composed largely of sandstone. Erosion in the area has resulted in nearly 300 natural rock arches being formed, along with many other spectacular landforms.

How to identify the sandstone

Sandstone containing more than 90% quartz is called quartzose sandstone.

When the sandstone contains more than 25% Feldspar, it is called argose or arkosic sandstone.

When there is a significant amount of clay or sil, geologists refer to the rock as argaglis sandstone.

The color of sandstone varies depending on their composition.

Argillacous sandstones are often gray to blue.

Because it is compiled from light colors, sandstone is typically light brown color in color.

The most common sandstones have several shades of red, caused by iron oxide (rust).

In some cases there are a press heroes caused by manganese.
