In expressing the trends, you can describe how the lines behave from beginning to end. In our first illustration, the line rises. In the second, the red line decreases while the blue one increases. In the third, the blue line remains stable, the black falls, and the red goes up. Use appropriate synonyms of the words used to describe trends. For example, we can replace the verb ‘rises’ with the word ‘increases’. The next lesson will discuss the language part thoroughly.

It is also advisable to include adverbs in our description. For example, let’s describe illustration 3, the black line. We can say ‘The black line drops dramatically’. ‘Dramatically’ is the appropriate adverb to describe the intensity of the fall.

Further, we can add time phrases such as:

throughout the period from ____ to ____
in the year ____
for ____ years
over the period ____ to ____
