Discuss Both Views

Q: Some people say history is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that, in today's world, subjects like science and technology are more important than history. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer:

The relative importance of more practical subjects like science and technology compared with history, for example, is an issue that continues to be relevant in modern society. In my view, despite the obvious importance of such practical subjects in daily life, history is significantly more important due to the contribution it makes to society, and most notably to the maintenance of world peace.

Those who argue that science and technology outrank history in terms of significance in school curricula typically assert that many modern jobs require the kind of technical skills that such subjects equip students with. On this point, I accept that designers of modern conveniences like washing machines and microwave ovens, considered essential in most modern societies, need skills in machining and precision engineering much more than historical knowledge. I accept also that computers are a prerequisite of modern life, offering myriad benefits, from reading utility meters to online supermarket shopping. There can be no doubt that design and use of computers requires skills that many first learn in science and technology lessons.

Nevertheless, I agree with those who suggest that an awareness of human history brings benefits which are much greater than those offered by studying technical subjects. The most significant one is that it has made a lasting contribution to world peace. A case in point is post-war Germany, whose students have been regularly reminded in the classroom of the horrors inflicted by their Nazi forebears in the Second World War. I believe that Germany’s record as peacemaker for the last 70 years owes much to the teaching of their national history in schools. In the case of Scandinavian countries, it has long been a scholastic tradition of theirs to teach the history of Africa and Asia. It is therefore not surprising that posts in aid agencies and international organisations dedicated to the alleviation of world poverty are disproportionately occupied by Scandinavians.

In summary, learning about science and technology at school is important because of its utility in many everyday situations. However, the study of history is more important because it provides the knowledge which is necessary to inspire countries to pursue peace and help poorer nations.
