Japan is both power-hungry and fossil-fuel reliant making for a bad combination but that could all soon change. The nation has now successfully tested a system relying on the deep ocean that could provide a reliable steady form of renewable energy.

The invention comes from Japanese heavy machinery maker IHI Corp. The company has been developing a subsea turbine that harnesses the energy in deep ocean currents for over ten years.
The giant sea turbine called Kairyu looks like a 330-ton airplane. It features two counter-rotating turbine fans that are connected by a massive fuselage and it functions by floating while anchoring to the sea floor at a depth of 100 to 160 feet.

Earlier in March this year, the 846th Test Squadron at the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico successfully recovered a reusable sled traveling at the hypersonic speed of Mach 5.8. This is the fastest ever sled recovery in the over three decades.
The Holloman AFB is also home to the Holloman High-Speed Test Track which was first built in 1949 to provide a realistic and cost-effective testing environment for weapons, systems, and components. The facility that serves all the units of the U.S. military also helps procurement agencies and defense contractors evaluate the technologies and components under development.

More than 46,000 people have lost over a billion dollars to crypto scams since the start of 2021, the Federal Trade Commission stated in a report released on Friday. This is about a fourth of total revenue lost to scams but also the largest using any payment methods.
2021 was rather a good year for cryptocurrencies. By November, various altcoins had together garnered a $3 trillion market share, more than what the likes of Apple, Microsoft, or Tesla individually commanded. The lure of the rising Bitcoin was also milked by scammers who pocketed more than a billion dollars in the year alone.

Avikus, a subsidiary of Hyundai, has successfully completed the first transoceanic voyage of a large merchant ship using autonomous navigation technologies.
With the increase in computational capabilities, autonomous navigation solutions are being tested in various fields of transportation. Autonomous cars are expected to bring in a new era of human transportation, and the maritime industry is also not very far behind.

We all hate it when a migraine creeps up on busy days, and one is left with no choice but to pop a medication and wait for the pain to subside. But if all goes well, a brain implant in the future will stop a migraine attack before it even hits, and we have the researchers at New York University to thank for it.

The implant, in its early experimental stage, was tested in rats. It might still be far away from medical use but is an important achievement in pain management. For starters, this is the first time an implant is actually doing something to arrest the signal it is receiving. So, far, implants have been used to send texts, give tactile feedback, and even allow monkeys to play games using their minds.

An autonomous hydrogen-fueled submarine could help to greatly reduce emissions from shipping, a report by the BBC explains. The submarine, developed by Oceanways, is one of several winners in a government competition aimed at tackling the industry's carbon footprint.
Oceanways received a £380,000 prize to aid them in the development of a self-driving submarine that delivers parcels by submerging itself 165 feet below the surface of the sea and taking shipping routes — such as the one from Belfast to Glasgow — to get to its destination. The submersible vehicle can even swim through shallow waters that large cargo ships cannot navigate.

Almost everybody doesn't want to die.
And it turns out humans can probably live to be at least 130 years old, and potentially far older, statistically, according to recent research published in the journal Royal Society Open Science. But it should go without saying that the chances for most of us living that long are breathtakingly slim.
While it doesn't hurt to hope, we'll probably need a major scientific revolution in medical technologies to make supercentenarian life a common condition.

Japanese car maker Toyota is betting on hydrogen to play an essential role in decarbonizing our energy demand and has unveiled a cartridge that will help make the fuel portable.
With the world looking for carbon-free energy sources, hydrogen is one of the options on the table. According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, a U.S. Department of Energy resource, 2.2 pounds (one kg) of hydrogen packs the same amount of energy as a gallon of gasoline. However, major hurdles in using hydrogen as a fuel are ensuring the safety and availability of the gas. Toyota aims to tackle these hurdles in one go with a cartridge-based solution.

The month of June brings a special celestial arrangement for all skygazers. Early morning, one will be able to see five planets lined up in the sky, not just on a single day but throughout the month.
Earlier in April this year, the planets Jupiter and Venus appeared to have ‘nearly collided’ in the night sky. Called conjunction, this is an optical illusion that we observe due to our location in the solar system when the two planets are actually millions of miles away from each other. While conjunctions usually occur with two or three planets, a five planet-alignment is rather rare.
