Researchers at the University of Portsmouth in the U.K. are looking to recruit volunteers for a trial that will test hypoxia - a state where the body does not receive sufficient amounts of oxygen - as an intervention for Type 2 diabetes press release from the university announced.

Multiple studies have shown that hypoxia improves blood sugar levels and aids in weight loss. Although scientists do not fully understand how this works, it is suggested that hypoxia burns more calories in the body, resulting in lower appetites in individuals. With a lesser intake and more expenditure of stored energy, individuals have been seen to lose weight when sleeping in reduced oxygen environments.

“It was a really fun experience but it also put me in contact with some pretty cool students from across the country,” Kukoyi told ABC News. “A lot of them are older and they’re like seniors or juniors that applied to many prestigious schools.”

That was his original inspiration. Now Kukoyi, his school’s first Black National Merit Scholar, has been accepted to more than 15 prestigious universities, including Stanford, Yale, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, Vanderbilt, Emory, Rice, Johns Hopkins, Duke, the University of Alabama, Case Western Reserve University, UAB, Auburn University, and Washington University in St. Louis.

German defense manufacturer, Rheinmetall, has unveiled a handheld grenade launcher called the Squad Support Weapon 40 (SSW40) that weighs and can be handled like a regular assault rifle, the company press release said.

In this day and age, when drones are being launched as if they were grenades, one would wonder if the launchers themselves have reached the end of the road in terms of their evolution. With drones getting smaller and warfare becoming more electronic, the focus may have shifted towards developing other technologies rapidly. Still, companies like Rheinmetall continue to work on improving combat weapons, too, and the SSW40 is proof of the progress they have made.

The International Space Station was forced to maneuver to avoid orbital debris from a recent Russian anti-satellite weapons test on Thursday, June 16, a post from Space.com reveals.

Russia destroyed the Soviet-era Cosmos 1408 satellite in November 2021 as part of an anti-satellite weapon test.

On Thursday, Russian space agency Roscosmos used its uncrewed Progress 81 cargo ship docked at the ISS to move the entire orbital laboratory away from the trajectory of a piece of space debris from Cosmos 1408.

The Colombian National Navy used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to go closer and capture new videos and images of the San José Galleon, an 18th-century ship that sank off the coast of Cartagena and has not come in human contact ever since, a press release from the national government said.

Earlier this year, we reported how the wreckage of an expedition ship was found 107 years after it sank. However, the wreckage of the San José Galleon is in a different league altogether. The Spanish ship was allegedly carrying 600 people on board along with 200 tons of treasures when British Navy ships sank it in 1708. The exact location of the shipwreck wasn’t known for three centuries and hasn’t been revealed by the authorities even now, Business Insider reported.

Tesla CEO and a vocal supporter of cryptocurrencies, Elon Musk, has once again said that he will continue to support Dogecoin and is even buying the dip, as per his recent tweets.

In investing parlance, ‘buying the dip, means investing in an asset when its prices are low with the faith that prices will go up once again. Earlier this year, when cryptocurrencies were going through a downward phase, El Salvador stocked up on the Bitcoin, even if it meant its previous buys were at a higher price. The hope, however, is that the asset will improve in the long run, something that we haven’t seen with cryptocurrencies in 2022.

Spend time in a city in summer and you can feel the urban heat rising from the pavement and radiating from buildings. Cities are generally hotter than surrounding rural areas, but even within cities, some residential neighborhoods get dangerously warmer than others just a few miles away.
Within these “micro-urban heat islands,” communities can experience heat wave conditions well before officials declare a heat emergency.

Quantum mechanics dictates that particles like atoms should also be thought of as waves and that technically we can build ‘atom lasers’ containing coherent waves of matter. The problem comes in making these matter waves last, so that they may be used in practical applications.
Now, a team of Amsterdam physicists has shown that this is indeed possible with some manipulation of the concept that underlies the atom laser the so-called Bose-Einstein Condensate, according to a press release published on June 10.

Elon Musk's Twitter deal has had its ups and downs. In April 2022, Twitter officially accepted Elon Musk's offer to buy the social media giant for roughly $44 billion, at a $54.20-per-share exchange.
Then in May 2022, the deal was put on hold.
Now, during his first meetings with Twitter employees this week, the entrepreneur said he is not so interested in being CEO but he does want people to listen to him, according to a report published by Business Insider on Saturday.

Robotics is making great strides in a variety of fields, including some quite unusual ones. Researchers at the Idiap Research Institute in Switzerland, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Wuhan University (WHU) have now engineered a machine learning-based method to teach robots to stir-fry like professional chefs, according to a report TechXplore published on Friday.
"Our recent work is the joint effort of three labs: the Robot Learning & Interaction group led by Dr. Sylvain Calinon at the Idiap Research Institute and the Collaborative and Versatile Robots laboratory led by Prof. Fei Chen Cuhk and the lab led by Prof. Miao Li at WHU," Junjia Liu, one of the researchers from the study, told TechXplore.
