Scientists in China say they have been able to run an artificial intelligence model as sophisticated as a human brain on their most powerful supercomputer, a report from the South China Morning Post reveals.

According to the report, this puts China's Newest Generation Sunway supercomputer on the same level as the U.S. Department of Energy's Frontier, which was named the world's most powerful supercomputer earlier this month.

As a point of reference, Frontier is the first machine to have demonstrated it can perform more than one quintillion calculations per second.

South Korea has successfully launched its first payload into orbit using a homegrown rocket.

The made-in-South Korea Nuri rocket put satellites into orbit for the first time following a failed attempt in 2021.

According to a Reuters report, South Korea's new Nuri rocket launched from Naro Space Center on Tuesday, June 21, at 3 a.m. EDT (0700 GMT). The rocket deployed six payloads into Earth's orbit shortly after launch.

Last week, it was revealed that microplastics were found for the first time in fresh Antarctic snow. They were discovered high in the Alps, bottled water, and human blood.

They can be harmful to animals if ingested. But the growing menace is difficult to remove — considering their size — especially once they settle into nooks and crannies at the bottom of waterways.

Researchers in the American Chemical Society's Nano Letters have devised a solution - a light-activated fish robot that “swims” around quickly, picking up and removing microplastics from the environment. Their work was published on June 22.

Bitcoin investors have lost $7.3 billion in just three days as investors traded their holdings during one of the lowest points in the cryptocurrency's history in recent years, Vice reported. Earlier this week, the value of Bitcoin dropped below $20,000 for the first since 2020.

Until a few months ago, rising inflation was a cause of concern for economic markets. After the U.S. Federal Reserve stepped in and increased interest rates, the highest in about three decades, the fears of a recession have now engulfed the markets. Investors have withdrawn capital from the markets looking for safer investment options, and cryptocurrencies, far away from the last year's peaks, were hit even further.

Elon Musk, the world's richest person, wants to sign up half the world's population to Twitter if his offered deal goes through, Bloomberg reported. Currently, the social media platform has 229 million users.
Musk, who offered to buy out Twitter in April, has himself put the deal on hold after pointing out concerns that the spam or fake account numbers on the platform are much higher than the company claims. Recently, we reported how the Twitter board wanted the company's shareholders to vote 'for the deal,' but the world's richest person has kept his options open to back out from the purchase.

In medical diagnosis news, a new technique has been developed that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in a single scan. A study on the new method has been fully described in Communications Medicine, a Nature Portfolio Journal.

According to the study, the new technique examines anatomical aspects of the brain, including those not previously linked to Alzheimer’s disease, using machine learning technologies. The technique’s benefit is its simplicity and the fact that it can detect the condition early on when it can be challenging to diagnose.

If you’re paying at least a little bit of attention to what you eat and drink, chances are you’ve heard of nutritional supplements. Many people use them in order to fill the nutritional gaps in their diets. They have become so popular that they can be found in various forms, such as tablets, capsules, drinks, etc.

Scientists from Northwestern Medicine, however, suggest that supplemental vitamins are a waste of money for non-pregnant and healthy Americans. In the press release that has just been published today, they also add that there isn’t enough evidence supporting the idea that supplements help prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer.

The Jumbo Kingdom, Hong Kong’s iconic floating restaurant that served customers for over 44 years at the city’s Aberdeen Harbour, has capsized while heading towards an unknown destination, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

A three-story vessel, Jumbo Kingdom, was established in 1976 after a purse of HK$30 million (US$3.82 million) was spent to design and build it. With an area of 45,000 square feet (4,500 sq m) and a seating capacity for 2,300 diners, Jumbo Kingdom held the honor of the world’s largest restaurant at one time, CNN reported.

The famous restaurant consisted of a large boat which was 260 feet (80 m) long, a smaller but older boat that hosted a sister restaurant, a barge for seafood tanks, a separate boat that served as the kitchen, and eight smaller boats that ferried visitors from nearby piers.

A group of researchers at Beijing Jiaotong University in China have developed and tested a ‘mind-reading’ device that will help implement the country’s policy of censoring porn, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

Watching porn is a crime in China, and the country has put in place several processes to scan the internet and social media platforms for explicit content and take it down. This includes the extensive use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) to flag content and also employing a large number of professional censors.

Called jian huang shi, or “porn appraiser,” these are positions held mostly by women who scour the photos and videos available on the internet in China. However, humans assigned to a task grow tired when doing it repeatedly, and fatigue throws up errors. Even A.I. algorithms can not pick all images, so some content still manages to slip unnoticed.
