Ibn ʿAsākir reported that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ḥātim (al-Rāzī) said:
وروى ابن عساكر أنَّ عبد الرحمن بن أبي حاتم قال:

I arrived at Damascus and came across the students of Ḥadīth. I passed by the circle of Qāsim al-Jūʿī,
«دخلْتُ دِمَشْقَ على كَتَبَةِ الحديثِ، فمررْتُ بِحَلْقة قاسمٍ الجُوعِيِّ،

I saw a group of people sitting around him while he was speaking, I loved the sight of them.
فرأيتُ نفرًا جلوسًا حوله وهو يتكلَّم عليهم، فهالني مَنْظَرُهُمْ، فتقدَّمْتُ إليهم،

I heard him saying: "Gain five characteristics from the people of your time:
فسمعتُهُ يقول: اغتَنِمُوا مِنْ أهلِ زمانكم خَمْسًا، منها:

If you are present in a gathering – you are not known,
إنْ حَضَرْتُمْ لم تُعْرَفُوا،

If you are absent – you are not missed,
وإنْ غِبْتُمْ لم تُفْقَدُوا،

If you are present – you are not asked for counsel,
وإنْ شَهِدتُّمْ لم تُشَاوَرُوا،

If you speak – your words are not accepted,
وإنْ قلتم شيئًا لم يُقْبَلْ قولُكُمْ،

And if you do something – you are not rewarded for it.
وإنْ عَمِلْتُمْ شيئًا لم تُعْطَوْا به.

I also advise you with five:
وأوصيكُمْ بخمسٍ أيضًا:

If you are oppressed – do not be oppressive,
إنْ ظُلِمْتُمْ لم تَظْلِموا،

If you are praised – do not be pleased,
وإنْ مُدِحْتُمْ لم تَفْرَحُوا،

If you are criticized – do not be sad,
وإنْ ذُمِمْتُمْ لم تَجْزَعوا،

If you are belied – do not get upset,
وإنْ كُذِّبْتُمْ فلا تَغْضَبُوا،

If people betray you – do not betray them.“
وإنْ خانوكم فلا تَخُونوا.

(Abū Ḥātim) stated: “So I made this the benefit that I gained from Damascus.”
قال: فجعلْتُ هذا فائدتي من دِمَشْقَ».
