Did your father help (you financially) in your watch repair work or other than it?
هل كنت تتعامل مع والدك في تبادل الساعات أو غير ذلك؟

Questioner: “Did your father give you any (financial) assistance or in your watch repair (business)?”
السائل: هل كنت تتعامل انت ووالدك في شغلك يعني تبادل الساعات أو؟

al-Shaykh: No not in anything.
الشيخ: لأ ما في أي شيء،

I got married through my own efforts,
أنا تزوجتُ بسعيي،

I got married and my father did not get involved,
خطبت وأبي لم يتدخَّل

Nor did he visit me,
ولا زارني

Nor congratulate me,
ولا هنَّاني

Nor (ask Allah to) bless me.
ولا بارك لي،

He would only come to the (ie: my watch repair) shop sometimes — but he would not enter.
إنما كان أحيانًا يأتي إلى الدكان ولا يدخل الدكان،

But maybe he said something later which may be an expiation for the (Ḥanafī) maḏhab - based enmity which he showed to me.
وإن قال كلمة لعلها كفَّارة لما بدرَ منه من المعاداة المذهبيَّة،

He said to me one time, “I do not deny that I have benefited from you.”
قال لي مرَّة: " أنا لا أنكر أنني استفدت منك "،

And I was his youngest son,
وأنا ابنه الصغير،

And I know this very well about him (that he did indeed benefit).
وأنا أعرف جيِّدًا منه.

Because he, like the other Shaykhs, used to go to the masājid in which there were qubūr (ie: graves).
لأنُّو كان يأتي للمساجد التي فيها قبور يتبرَّك بها كعامة المشايخ يعني،

And I used to say to him, “This, O my father, is not allowed, and in this is such and such…”
فأنا كنت أقول له: هذا يا أبي لا يجوز، وهذا فيه كذا وفيه كذا إلى آخره،

Likewise (he benefitted) as regards which ḥadīths were authentic and weak. So he did indeed benefit.
فهو إما موضوع الحديث الصحيح والضعيف ما هو في هذا الوادي، كل المتفقِّهة، فهو فعلًا استفاد ؛

But his age and his social standing in the Arnāʿūṭi community did not give him the chance to be pleased with his son who was regarded as a deviant in front of al-jamāhīr (ie: the masses).
لكن سنُّه ومركزه الاجتماعي بين الأرناؤوط ما كان يفسح له المجال أن يرضى بوضع ابنه الشاذ عند الجماهير.

So this is something from the story of the beginning of my seeking knowledge, and then my independence in it.
فهذا شيء من قصة ابتداء طلبي للعلم ثم استقلالي فيه،

al-Shāhid (ie: the point is) that the al-Manār magazine was the thing that opened the path for me to become engaged in the science of ḥadīth.
والشاهد أن " مجلة المنار " هي التي فتحت لي الطريق للاشتغال بعلم الحديث.
