Did your father carry on with al-jafāʾ (ie: his detachment) to | IlmTest

Did your father carry on with al-jafāʾ (ie: his detachment) towards you until the end of his life?

Questioner: “Alright, as regards your father, did he carry on with al-jafāʾ towards you until the end of his life?”

al-Shaykh: “As in al-jafāʾ (up to the end)?”

al-Ḥuwaynī: “Yes.”

al-Shaykh: “I said to you: he would come to me in the shop and give salām but would not enter it. Meaning yes (his father distanced himself up until the end of his life).”

Questioner: “Yes, but, O our Shaykh, is this not regarded as disobedience (towards the parents)?”

[the Shaykh and al-Ḥuwaynī started to laugh (at this question)]

al-Shaykh: baʿḍ al-mutaʿaṣṣib (ie: some prejudiced people) may think that, in fact, they openly say it,

However without a doubt, it is not possible for an ʿālim (ie: scholar) in al-dunyā (ie: the world) to say: “Preferring the Sunnah in opposition to the school of thought of the father is regarded as disobedience of the parents.”

Because in the eyes of al-ʿulamāʾ (ie: the scholars) disobedience of the parents is opposing the father. Opposing his orders and rebelling against him without there being any ijtihād behind that opposition,

Without the ijtihād being the incentive to follow the Book and the Sunnah.

So I do not think that any fair individual will regard this has disobedience (of the parents).

For if not then Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi salām), would be (regarded) as having been disobedient to his father.

Of course, someone may say: that was (an issue) of kufr wa Tawḥīd (ie: disbelief and monotheism).

So I say: “Yes, but this too was (a matter) of the Sunnah or taqlīd (ie: blind-following),

So it is not permissible.”
