The Proto-Indo-European root *pah- gives us words like father, paternal, and pastor, and the root meaning is protect—the pater is the *pah-tḗr, the protect-or. At its most fundamental, this is what it is to be a father: a shepherd, a guardian, a warrior, a protector.

I think about Bridger Walker often in this connection. You may remember him as the boy who jumped in front of his sister to protect her from a dog attack that would probably have killed her. When asked why he did it, he answered "If someone was going to die, I thought it should be me."

That sums up what it is to be a father.

ANTI-STATISM — The state is something good and necessary; we didn't wield it against our enemies, so they wielded it against us.
LIBERALISM — The Enlightenment was a mistake and you can draw a straight line from it to trans story hour with no gaps.
DEMOCRACY — The people's interests come first, but they can no more rule than the son can rule the father because his interests come first.
CAPITALISM — Owning things is good, but the public/private distinction is not real, and only distorts the reality of the situation.

But many of us have discarded these and are moving toward a true alternative to what got us here in the first place. It seemed like things were better in 2016 and we were winning, but that's because we hadn't yet seen the depth of the problem and how dangerous the beast would be once we struck a nerve.
